Shift Dresses for Women Over 50: Cute, Comfortable, and No Sucking In Required

I’ve always loved shift dresses, but I appreciate them even more these days.

Like many midlife women, my waist isn’t quite as defined as it used to be. It’s not that I’ve gained a lot of weight, but my shape has changed a little over the years, and dresses that once felt perfectly comfortable—like a fitted sheath dress—can sometimes feel a little snug around the middle. (o.k…very snug – lol!)

That’s one reason I keep coming back to shift dresses.

Why I love Shift Dresses

What I love about them is that, unlike fitted sheaths or bodycon styles, a shift doesn’t hug your curves—it skims over them. That straight, relaxed cut gives you a little more room through the waist, so you can relax, breathe, enjoy lunch, and get on with your day without thinking about your stomach every five minutes.

If you’ve noticed a thicker waist since menopause (hello, menopause middle), a shift dress is your friend.

I also find them perfect for travel. When I’m sightseeing, shopping, or exploring a new city, I almost always pack at least one. They’re cooler than pants, more polished than shorts, and easy to wear from morning to night.

And while comfort is definitely part of the appeal, I think the real reason I keep reaching for shift dresses is that they’re still very chic. They have that sporty, Jackie Kennedy feel that never seems to go out of style.

Here are some of my favorite shift dresses this season that incorporate all the latest trends.

What Makes a Shift Dress Flattering?

Not all shift dresses are created equal. Some can feel a little boxy, while others skim beautifully over the body. Here are a few things I look for when shopping for a shift dress.

A fabric with some substance
A shift dress hangs best when the fabric has a little structure. Crepe, ponte, linen blends, and lined cotton tend to skim the body nicely without clinging.

A flattering neckline
I love a V-neck because it draws the eye upward and creates a longer line. Boat necks and open collars can be beautiful too.

The right length
Many sheath dresses ( especially in summer) are on the short side. They look best with a cute flat sandal or very low heel or wedge. You can find longer shift dresses that land at the knee or just below if you feel more comfortable. They’re a little more elegant and less sporty.

***PLEASE REMEMBER- most of these models are 5’10” or taller, so shift dresses will always look short online. Be sure to check the dress length in the product details before automatically saying no to a shorter shift dress!!

A few interesting details
Seams, texture, subtle prints, or a touch of tailoring can make a shift dress feel more polished and prevent it from looking too plain.

How I Like to Wear a Shift Dress

One of the reasons I love shift dresses is that they’re so versatile.

For travel
This is probably where I wear them most. Pair one with comfortable sneakers and a crossbody bag, and you’re ready to explore.

For lunch or everyday outings
A shift dress with sandals or flats always looks pulled together without feeling overdressed.

For work
A tailored shift and a blazer are an easy combination that always looks professional.

For weddings and special occasions
A dressier shift in a beautiful print or fabric can be a great alternative to a more fitted dress.

My Favorite Shift Dress Styling Tricks

  • Add a long necklace to create a longer, leaner line.
  • Throw on a cropped jacket for a little extra shape.
  • Wear low wedges or low heels so your dress doesn’t look too short and off balance.
  • Have fun with accessories—the simple shape of a shift dress is the perfect backdrop for a great bag, colorful earrings, or a statement bracelet.

Do I, Deb?

Yes! A great shift dress is one of those pieces you’ll wear again and again. It’s comfortable, easy, and always looks polished.

If your waist isn’t quite as defined as it used to be—or you want a dress that lets you relax and enjoy your day—a shift dress is hard to beat!
