A sweater dress with boots is always a comfortable, cozy look for fall, but you can start to look dated if you don’t change things up a little bit from year to year. A fresh new pair of boots is all you need to tweak your chic. Here’s a look at what’s trending and some modern ways to style a sweater dress with boots.
1. Pair a Sweater Dress with Short Suede Booties
If you are used to pulling on your favorite black, knee-high leather boots with a sweater dress, that’s perfectly fine, but you’re not going to turn any heads. These days traditional tall black boots can look a little practical, or even boring compared to wearing a sweater dress with short booties.
If you have never worn short booties with a dress, let alone a sweater dress, it may feel a little funny at first, but it is actually a very modern and sophisticated look. Try a pair on, walk around and take a look in the mirror. I bet you will be kicking up your heels in no time!
How do you know what kind of bootie to wear?
A light, fine-ribbed sweater dress like this gorgeous green sweaterdress (above) demands an elegant bootie. This taupe suede bootie is a perfect match. Why? First of all this style of bootie is very sleek and minimalistic. There’s almost no detail which translates into elegant. Also, it’s suede. Suede looks luxurious and has texture. A textured bootie worn with a textured knit is the perfect pairing.
The high shaft on this boot is also the key to making the outfit work. A short ankle bootie would generally not be as dressy, and would look heavy with a ladylike dress like this. A bit of a heel, like the one on this bootie, also gives it a chic vibe.
2. Wear Over the Knee Boots with a Short Sweater Dress
Have you been wondering if you can wear a sweater dress with over the knee booties and not look hookerish? Yes, you can. It’s all in the way you style it. I would suggest you choose a sweater dress that isn’t too, too short. I know a lot of them generally are. This one is short, but o.k. and with over the knee boots, it will look great.
Generally, over the knee boots should leave just a touch of space between the sweater dress and the knee or you can have it meet the hem of the sweater dress if you prefer.
Another tip…, Flat, over the knee boots or low heeled over the knee boots give you a more sporty modern look than over the knee boots with high heels. It also helps to stay clear of shiny boots such as patent leather over the knee boots. Leave these for “pretty woman” types.

3. Go for Mod Print Booties
Here’s a very fashion-forward way to wear a sweater dress with boots. You know that plaid is in, right? How cute are these! A pair of print or patterned booties look darling with a sweaterdress.
The trick is to make sure your sweaterdress is plain and one solid color so the print is in the spotlight. Just because I have shown this outfit with bare legs doesn’t mean you have to it this way. Instead, wear black, opaque stockings with this sweater dress and booties, and you will rock this look!
* Style Note: Stay away from sheer nylons or black nylons. They’re too thin and wimpy looking to wear with a knit. You need a heavy opaque stocking with a sweaterdress and booties to look fab.
