Early Spring Outfits for Women Over 50: A Talbots Try-On
There’s snow on the ground in many places, and you need to bundle up to go outside, but that hasn’t stopped Talbots from rolling out their early spring arrivals. What a breath of fresh air!
I popped into the dressing room to try on a few early spring outfits for women over 50 and found some great transitional pieces you can wear now and well into Spring. Take a look and tell me what you loved—or could’ve skipped.
Talbots early spring outfits

Crewneck Tunic . Slim Ankle jeans
Transitional Tunic Sweater
Mix a cozy sweater with a bright color like this stunning orange, and you get the perfect thing to wear in the blah months of January and February. I love the gorgeous ribbed texture and chic side slits. It’s the ideal length for leggings or slim jeans. This one’s a keeper for me!

Twill Utility Jacket . Hooded rain cape (similar) . relaxed striped shirt. white jeggings . loafers*
New Nautical
I don’t know about you, but Spring is looking pretty ship shape to me… that is, I have seen so many nautical looks. This one is darling. I always love a cute spring jacket, and this Twill utility jacket has so much style. I love the cargo look, the high collar,r and that figure-flattering drawstring waist.
The shirt is fantastic. Yeah, I know it’s just a striped shirt, but it’s a really good one! The slightly relaxed fit, the stunning French blue color, and the way it looks so crisp and classic, yet fresh.
I bought both the jacket and shirt to go with these white jeggings, which I already own. I also tried them on with Talbots Barely Boot jeans and their slim ankle jeans, and they looked great, too.

Roll neck sweater. Slim ankle jeans with raw hem. loafers*
Roll Neck Sweater
I have a thing for rolled neck sweaters. Remember the blue cotton roll-neck sweater I bought at the end of last summer? Talbots has one now in a very similar color, which is a sister sweater to the gorgeous cream-and-tan one I’m wearing here. Again, we’re looking at a great “bridge piece” as I like to call it. I’m talking about tops that work for now and into Spring, even very early summer.
This lovely sweater, with drop shoulders and a soft, rolled collar, has a great shape. It has that casual, relaxed vibe but isn’t sloppy, and goes well with any pair of jeans, including these new raw-hem slim ankle ones I just picked up. You know, I’m not a big raw-hem gal, but these were so subtle I found them kind of cute for a spring weekend.

Red denim jacket. Ruffle Popover. Barely boot jeans. loafers*
Red Denim Jacket
Every year, Talbots puts out at least one fabulous colored denim jacket, and this year (right in time for Valentine’s Day), it’s bright red. LOVE IT!
It’s a great option for transitional winter to spring outfits because it layers easily and elevates any casual outfit.
I’m wearing it here with this blue and white spring ruffle popover shirt and my favoritebarelyy boot jeans, which are a cross between a straight leg and bootcut. Basically, it’sa not-so-wide bootcut, and it is one of the best cuts I have found to flatter your figure and go with so many outfits.

Ruffle Popover. Barely boot jeans, loafers*
Ruffle Neck Popover Shirt
I thought I’d give you a closer look at this shirt since you can barely see it in the last photo. I love the navy/French blue mix, and the pattern is cute too.
By popover, this shirt slips over your head. It’s similar to a purple shirt I wore in the fall with the understated ruffle at the neckline. However, this one is longer and more tunic-style.
You’d never know it, though, because it also looks good tucked in. Don’t you love that? It’s great when you can get two completely different looks from one shirt. Click the link to see the tunic version of this look.

Ponte Zip Shoulder. Ponte Leggings . loafers*
Ponte Zip Top and Leggings
Everywhere I look, people are wearing loungewear sets at home and casually while traveling. I get it because they’re comfy, have a modern, sleek look, and are easy to throw on and look totally put together. This is definitely one of my favorites this year.
I love this space-age mock neck tunic style with the big gold zipper at the shoulder. The brown is rich and elegant, and as a set, it’s very figure-flattering. If you see me getting on a plane anytime soon, this is what I’ll be wearing. It’s the perfect travel look.

Straight Ankle Twill Pants. Embroidered Drop Shoulder Top. black slingbacks*
The Best Twill Pants for Spring
We all love jeans, and cargo pants are good too, but what other kinds of casual but smart-looking pants can you wear? Talbots has come out with these really great straight-ankle twill pants with a big, wide cuff. I wasn’t sure, cropped, big cuff, but I tried them on and fell in love.
They’re super comfy -soft, fitted but not tight, and that seam down the front makes you look tall and slim. (I’ll always take a couple more inches!)
The top I’m wearing is really fresh. Navy is always my go-to color this time of year. It’s so much fresher and livelier than dreary winter black, which can really make you feel down when you wear it all fall.
I love the pretty lace on this too, which adds some nice texture. It’s nice on its own, but I noticed it is styled with a shirt under it online, and I really like that look too!

Omg! What amazing outfits you put together! I have a dreaded pear shape and it’s so nice Talbots carries tunic length tops. You look absolutely Amazing!
Thanks Sandy, I find Talbots such an easy place to shop. They always have classic styles with a modern twist, lots of color and the right kind of outfits for so many occasions. Plus things mix and match from year to year. I like the ease of shopping with them because I have other stuff I want to do with my life! Cheers, Deb
The ponte loungewear set is really cute! I love the blue jacket and striped shirt too. I am also a fan of their barely boot cut jean. Let’s hope for an early spring!
Hi Susan, Spring can’t come soon enough for me. I trick my brain into a better mood with bright colors and more early spring styles in Jan/Feb if I’m not down in Florida- hah hah!
Hi, Deb. I think the blue jacket that is linked is not the one you’re wearing under your “Nautical” headline. Both are great. But, the link takes us to the “Hooded Rain Jacket”. The one you’re wearing is the “Twill Utility Jacket”, I believe. Thanks for always modeling everything so beautifully!
Hi Deb, Thanks for having such an eagle eye! You are right. My apologies. I bought the twill utility jacket which is shorter and more fitted with no hood. It looks so much like the cape coat at first glance. I didn’t see the cape coat in the store but it looks really nice too. None-the-less I love the cargo jacket I bought. It feels so good on and it just the perfect cross between practical and chic! The link is now changed to the utility jacket ladies, but I left the cape option in too in case you prefer that. Cheers, Deborah
You’re welcome! Your try-on sessions are my favorite, but everything you post is wonderful. We have very similar body shapes and coloring so I can tell if it looks good on you it probably will on me. I really look forward to seeing your emails!
