Do’s and Don’ts for Choosing a Fall or Winter Coat
In winter, your outerwear says everything. A fabulous winter coat can be a powerful style statement, and since it’s one of the biggest fashion investments of the year, you want to make sure you get it right. So here are some do’s and don’ts for Fall and Winter Coats, plus a few of my newest favorites.
Do…
Invest in Quality: You can see and feel the difference. I love my Belted Alpaca Wool Wrap Coat by Sentaler which also comes in garnet red and camel.
Treat yourself to more than one style: One coat doesn’t do it for every look, and there are so many interesting and stylish coats. For example, a puffer for sportier days, a long wool tailored coat for dressing up, a short zip-up car coat with an interesting detail for running errands, and a cropped faux fur coat for a bit of glam fun.
Experiment with color: A bold shot of color looks amazing in winter and brings out your personality. I have a hot pink coat I love. Be sure to wear a bright color with neutrals underneath so as not to overpower your coat.
Choose different lengths: Don’t always go for the same length coat and try layering different ways, like a long coat over a short hem or a short jacket over a short hem. There’s no right or wrong.
Don’t
Forget to accessorize: This bold red coat is gorgeous, but it’s even more stunning accessorized with a red cashmere scarf for a tone-on-tone look. Gloves and a hat can totally uplevel a coat look, too. The right boots and bag make it.
Leave loose belts hanging: Tie a neat knot or a beautiful bow in the back to look polished and prevent the belt from dragging in the snow.
Fear Patterns and Prints: A gorgeous check or plaid in classic or modern colors is sure to wow and will make you feel fresh and updated.
Unstitched pockets – On coats with big pockets or more formal wool coats, pockets left stitched closed can make the coat look more streamlined and classy.
Bottom Line
It’s easy to fall into the rut of buying basically the same classic winter coat over and over. (I took a chance with this long, bright red puffer coat when I normally wear a short, neutral colored one), and I love it! Challenge yourself to get out of your style box and pick something with a bit of a modern twist. Have fun, and feel confident.
