I get days when I shampoo my hair, and it still feels like there’s something clinging to it. It isn’t dirty, exactly. It just feels coated—almost a little sticky—and no matter what I do it won’t bounce, shine, lift, or style the way it normally does.

The problem is usually product buildup.

Styling creams, hairspray, dry shampoo, hard water, and even some conditioners leave a film on your hair over time. A clarifying shampoo washes all that away, leaving your hair feeling lighter, softer, shinier, and much easier to style.

Here are the clarifying shampoos I think are worth trying ( I’ve used many of them) , and how to tell when your hair is asking for a fresh start.

What Is a Clarifying Shampoo?

Think of a clarifying shampoo as a deep clean for your hair. Your everyday shampoo washes away dirt and oil, but it doesn’t always remove everything else that’s hanging on. Styling products, dry shampoo, hard water minerals, and even some conditioners can leave behind buildup over time.

That’s why your hair can suddenly feel flat, look dull, or refuse to cooperate no matter what you do. A clarifying shampoo washes away that extra residue.

How Do You Know If You Need a Clarifying Shampoo?

Here are a few signs it’s time for a deep clean:

• Your hair feels flat, even after you’ve washed it.
• Your roots get greasy faster than they used to.
• Your hair looks dull instead of shiny.
• Styling products don’t seem to work as well anymore.
• Your hair feels coated or a little waxy.
• Your scalp feels itchy or uncomfortable.
• You use a lot of dry shampoo or styling products.
• You have hard water or swim regularly.

How Often Should You Use a Clarifying Shampoo?

This depends on your hair type and how many products you use. If you use a lot of dry shampoo, hairspray, or styling products, once a week is usually enough to keep buildup under control. If you don’t use many products, every two to four weeks is often plenty.

I have fine hair, and I use a root lift spray when I blow-dry, so I use this about every 3 weeks to keep the stickiness away.

If your hair is color-treated, curly, or on the dry side, once a month is usually enough. Because these hair types tend to be drier to begin with, you don’t want to overdo it and make them even drier.

Will a Clarifying Shampoo Strip Your Hair Color?

This was something I was concerned about when I first started using clarifying shampoos. Most clarifying shampoos are stronger cleansers than everyday shampoos, so using them too often can cause color to fade a little faster.

But using a clarifying shampoo every few weeks is generally fine for most color-treated hair. You just need to follow up with a good conditioner or moisturizing hair mask to replace any lost moisture.

After I get my hair freshly colored, I typically wait about a week or two before using a clarifying shampoo so my color has time to settle.

Best Overall Clarifying Shampoo: Ouai Detox Shampoo

If I could only recommend one clarifying shampoo, the Ouai Detox Shampoo would be it. It gives your hair that “just left the salon” feeling without leaving it dry or stripped. Apple cider vinegar is excellent for removing product buildup and hard water minerals, while keratin smooths and softens your hair.

Best for Product Buildup: Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo

Sometimes your hair just needs a rest. After a week of dry shampoo, hairspray, and styling products, Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo washes everything away so your hair feels lighter, looks brighter and has more life again. A little goes a long way.

Best for Fine Hair: Davines SOLU Clarifying Shampoo

Fine hair doesn’t need a heavy clarifying shampoo. The Davines SOLU Clarifying Shampoo made with buckwheat extract, gives your hair a really good clean without weighing it down, so it feels lighter and has more natural body. It’s great when your roots are looking flat, and your hair could use an airy lift.

Cult Favorite: Olaplex Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo

I love this deep cleanse treatment that my daughter bought me for Christmas, and I’m not the only one. The Olaplex Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo gets high marks for refreshing your hair without stripping it.

It’s Vegan, sulfate-free, and pH-balanced, and it has the signature Olaplex bond-building ingredient to make your hair strong. It’s on the expensive side compared to drugstore brands, but I think it is worth it.

Best for Color-Treated Hair or Grey Hair: Living Proof Clarifying Detox Shampoo

Color-treated and grey hair also need a good deep clean every now and then, and this Living Proof Clarifying Detox Shampoo gets the job done without feeling harsh. It removes buildup from styling products, hard water, and pollution while helping hair stay soft, smooth, and full of shine.

Best Natural: Jooy Clarifying Shampoo and Conditioner

This is a new one that I’ve been testing lately that I really like. Jooy Clarifying Shampoo and Conditioner is formulated with fermented superfoods to help remove buildup, strengthen strands, and restore balance to your scalp. It’s created without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicone, and all that other bad stuff. It also comes with a scalp energizing brush to loosen buildup. The result is genuinely clean hair, not stripped.

Best for Curly Hair: Curlsmith Curl Reset Detox Shampoo

Curly hair loves moisture, but all those creams and gels can start to build up after a while and strip the moisture away. This Curlsmith Curl Reset Detox Shampoo helps get rid of the gunk without leaving your curls dry or horribly frizzy.

Best Sudsy Shampoo: Kristin Ess

If you like a super sudsy shampoo, you’ll love Kristin Ess. This affordable clarifying shampoo ($12) removes mineral deposits, targets weak hairs, and seals split ends. It has a pleasant herbal smell thanks to ingredients like pink pepper, apple, blonde tobacco, gardenia, and white cedar wood. There’s also an accompanying conditioner, which makes things easy.

Best for an Oily Scalp: Goop G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scalp Scrub Shampoo

Sometimes it’s your scalp that needs the most attention. The Goop G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scalp Scrub Shampoo is a cool product because it’s an exfoliator, that combines shampoo with mineral rich Himalayan salt to buff off oil and buildup. If your scalp has been feeling itchy or your roots get greasy quickly, this type of product is worth a look. I haven’t tried Gwyneth’s yet, but I do use Nature Lab Perfect Clean from Tokoyo and love it.

Best Budget Clarifying Shampoo: L’Oréal EverPure Clarify Shampoo

You don’t have to spend a lot to get a good clarifying shampoo. The L’Oréal EverPure Clarify Shampoo is an affordable option that does a nice job of washing away buildup while still being gentle on color-treated hair. I use this one all the time. If you’re curious about clarifying shampoos but don’t want to splurge, this is a great place to start.
