If you need a new bathing suit, but you’ve reached the ‘Bye-bye bikini’ stage, have you considered a tankini?
More modest than a bikini, cute tankinis for women have come a long way from the days we thought of them as the swimwear equivalent of ‘mom jeans’. Today’s versions run the gamut from modest tankinis to trendy tankinis? ooh, la la sexy tankinis.
Here is what to look for when shopping for a Tankini and three examples of cute tankinis that are guaranteed to make you look like a beach babe.
1. Choose a Standout Color
Whether it’s on the beach or in the boardroom, many gals over 40 avoid color because they’re afraid of standing out. (Then they complain about feeling invisible but that’s a whole other blog post. LOL!) The reality is that a flattering color will make you look healthy and attractive.
Hot pink and coral tankini tops, for example, can really help you play up even a very light tan, so give some serious thought to buying a tankini in one of these warm, flattering shades. (To learn more about the power of color to make you look healthy and youthful, check out my eBook, Color Me Fabulous.)
Color isn’t the only thing this cute tankini has going for it in terms of making you look beach-babelicious. The wrap-front style is sexy and sophisticated and the underwire support and tummy control enhance your silhouette.
2. Look for Sexy Details
Women’s tankinis used to get a bit of a bad rap as being dowdy and some of that may have been deserved. Tankinis for women who are on the heavy side can be grumpy if they don’t cover the thighs with a skirted bottom half, or they have short tops that ride up over the tummy.
The most attractive tankini fits you well and includes some small, sexy detail. For example, the straps on this black tankini are exactly what I’m talking about. The strappy style adds a little sex appeal without going overboard. Strapless tankinis, wrap tankinis, and V-neck tankinis are all very stylish too. Stay away from trendy tankinis that look gimmicky with a lot of skin showing. Go with a classic tankini with a modern twist and you can never go wrong.
An extra bonus is the tummy-control top holds you in so nothing shows that shouldn’t be.

3. Use Pattern to Camouflage
No matter how toned you are, we all have the odd wobbly bit we would rather not draw attention to. An easy trick to divert the eye away from those areas is to wear a modest tankini with a print. Bulges and bits stand out way less when the eye is busy going back and forth over the print.
