How to Wear a Scarf in Spring and Summer: 5 Modern Ways for Women Over 40

Scarves are back in a big way this spring and summer, and they are a lot cooler than you remember. A lightweight scarf is one of the easiest ways to add color and personality to simple warm-weather outfits. It solves the freezing in air conditioning problem without adding any bulk at all. And in the right fabric, it feels like wearing practically nothing.

Today, I am sharing five of my favorite ways to wear a scarf as the weather warms up. These are easy, modern looks that will make you wonder why you ever put your scarves away in the first place!

Start With the Right Fabric, and Everything Gets Easier

Here is the number-one reason most women avoid scarves in warm weather: the wrong fabric. And I completely get it! A chunky wool scarf in July sounds miserable.

But, a whisper-thin silk square or a floaty piece of chiffon? Barely there. These fabrics add zero warmth and all of the style. Here is what I look for when I am shopping for spring and summer scarves:

  • Silk and silk twill: The gold standard. Lightweight, breathable, and absolutely gorgeous. These drape beautifully and are the most versatile option you can own for warm weather.
  • Chiffon: Floaty and feminine. Perfect for dressier occasions or anytime you want something that moves when you do.
  • Gauze and cotton voile: Airy and casual. Wonderful for beach days, travel, and relaxed weekend outfits.
  • Linen blends: Textured and relaxed. Pairs well with linen separates and summer dresses.

I used to think of scarves as more of a fall thing, but lightweight ones have been trending lately, and I’ve discovered what a perfect little extra when your outfit feels a bit plain… or when you walk into an ice-cold restaurant in the middle of summer. Scarves add color, soften your look, and give you that “finished” feeling without any effort.

The Most Current Scarf Styles for Spring and Summer

Silk Squares

These are having such a major moment right now, and I am here for it. Small silk squares in bold prints, florals, and geometric patterns feel very current. You can tie one at the neck, use it as a hair wrap, or knot it onto your bag. One little square scarf and you have three different looks. I love that kind of versatility!

Lightweight Printed Scarves

Florals, tropical prints, and abstract patterns in fresh spring and summer colors are everywhere right now. Think soft coral, sky blue, sage green, and cream. These printed lightweight scarves are the easiest way to bring in a seasonal color without committing to a whole new outfit.

Gauze, Linen, and Boho Weaves

These have a relaxed, artisanal feel that pairs beautifully with the linen and relaxed dressing that is so popular right now. If your summer style leans casual and effortless, a gauze, linen, or open-weave scarf in a natural or earthy tone will feel like it was made for your wardrobe.

Diamond Scarf

These colorful skinny scarves add a luxe look to everyday outfits, and are very popular in summer because they are smaller and lighter. They’re easy to tie around the neck as a neckerchief, western bandana, or chic necktie.

5 Ways I Love to Wear a Scarf in Spring and Summer

1. The Loose Neck Drape

This is honestly my go-to, and I think it will become yours too. Just loop a long silk or chiffon scarf around your neck and let both ends fall naturally. That is it!

Pick a scarf in one of your wow colors. Choose shades that make your eyes light up and your skin glow. Your scarf will be right next to your face all day, so this is exactly where your best colors need to be.

2. The Side Tied Silk

Take a small square silk scarf, fold it into a band, and tie it loosely to one side of your neck. I know that sounds almost too simple, but trust me on this one!

The effect is an instant face-brightening, and it feels very Parisian. Very effortless and chic. I love wearing this with open-neck tops, a button-down with the collar open, or over a simple crewneck. Keep the rest of your jewelry minimal and let the scarf be your statement.

3. The Hair Wrap

Tie a slim silk scarf around a low bun, through a ponytail, or fold it into a headband. It keeps your hair off your face in the heat, adds a hit of color or pattern right at eye level, and looks so intentional.

Look for skinny silk scarves or small square scarves for this one. Bold prints, florals, and geometric patterns all look amazing. Pair your hair wrapped scarf with simple gold earrings!

4. The Bag Tie

If you read my fall scarf post, you know I am a huge fan of this look year-round. But it feels especially perfect in summer! Knot a small silk square or a lightweight scarf around the handle of your tote, straw bag, or raffia clutch.

Summer bags love this kind of detail. Let the ends flutter loose for a relaxed, casual feel, or tie a soft bow for a little more polish. It works with almost any bag style.

5. The Shoulder Wrap

For evenings, breezy patio dinners, or anytime you want a little coverage without reaching for a cardigan, drape a larger lightweight scarf across your shoulders like a wrap. This is so beautiful over a sleeveless dress or as a chic layer over a swimsuit cover-up. I think of it as the scarf version of a summer cardigan, but infinitely more stylish.

What Scarf to Wear With Every Summer Outfit

Not sure where to start? I put this little guide together just for you:

  • White jeans and a tee: Tie a colorful silk scarf at the neck or thread it through your belt loops for a fun pop of pattern.
  • Linen dress: Go for a shoulder drape or a loose neck loop in a neutral or complementary color. So chic!
  • Sundress: A hair wrap or bag tie keeps things playful. Try a bold print here and have fun with it.
  • Blazer outfit: The side-tied silk at the neck looks incredibly polished. This one always gets compliments.
  • Swimsuit or cover-up: A shoulder wrap or a scarf tied loosely at the hip gives you that resort-ready finish I love.

A Quick Word on Caring for Your Summer Scarves

A beautiful silk or chiffon scarf can last for years with just a little bit of love. I store mine folded flat so they do not get creased. For silk, I either hand-wash them gently in cool water or take them to the dry cleaner. Most printed cotton and gauze scarves can be easily hand-washed at home.

Always steam delicate fabrics rather than ironing them directly. It is gentler and works just as well. Take good care of them, and they will take good care of you for years to come!
