Scarves are back in a big way this fall, and I have to say, I’m loving what I’m seeing. After years of barely giving them a thought, scarves are suddenly one of the easiest ways to make a simple fall outfit look fresh and interesting.

But forget the heavy, bulky blanket scarves and complicated knots we wore years ago. Fall 2026 scarves are lighter, looser, and much more stylish. Beautiful printed silk scarves are leading the way, along with long skinny styles, elegant fringed stoles, and soft cashmere scarves casually draped over the shoulders.
And we’re not just wearing them around our necks. Scarves are showing up tucked into blazers, tied at the waist, tossed over one shoulder, and even worn as a soft layer over a jacket.
If you have a drawer full of scarves you haven’t touched in years, it may be time to take another look. Here’s what’s current for Fall 2026 and the easiest ways to wear a scarf without looking dated.
The Most Current Scarf Styles for Fall 2026
The easiest way to make a scarf look modern is to start with the right style. Some old favorites are back, but they’re being worn in a much more relaxed way.
1. Printed Silk Scarves

Silk scarves are one of the biggest scarf trends for Fall 2026, and they’re such an easy way to bring color and pattern to your face.
Classic square scarves are especially popular, from smaller neckerchief sizes to larger silk squares you can drape over your shoulders. Look for rich florals, equestrian prints, geometric patterns, stripes, dots, and other beautiful prints that give a simple outfit some personality.
Try one with a crisp white shirt, a fine knit sweater, or tucked inside the neckline of a blazer or jacket. The key is to keep the rest of your outfit fairly simple and let the scarf do the talking.
2. Long, Lean Scarves

Long, narrow scarves are still going strong this fall. I like them because they create a lovely vertical line without adding a lot of bulk around your neck.
You’ll see lightweight wool, silk, cashmere and soft blends worn long and loose over sweaters, jackets and coats. You can also toss one end over your shoulder and leave the other hanging down.
This is one of the easiest scarf styles to wear if you like a clean, modern look.
3. Skinny Scarves

Yes, skinny scarves are still in! These are even narrower than a traditional long scarf and have a slightly playful, fashion-forward feel. Wear one loosely knotted at the neck or simply drape it around your neck and let the ends hang.
A solid color is sleek and sophisticated, while a leopard print, polka dot or colorful silk version can add some fun to jeans and a simple top.
Just don’t wind it around your neck several times or fuss with an elaborate knot. The looser it looks, the more current it feels.
4. Fringed Scarves and Stoles

Here’s one of the newer looks I’m seeing for Fall 2026: long scarves and elegant stoles with fringe.
These have a little more drama than your everyday scarf and look beautiful worn over a blazer, sweater, dress or coat. Instead of wrapping them tightly around your neck, let them hang long or casually toss one end over your shoulder.
They’re especially pretty for dinner, holiday dressing, or anytime you want an outfit to feel a little more special.
5. Large Wrap Scarves

Large scarves haven’t disappeared, but the old oversized blanket scarf has definitely had an update.
Instead of huge, bulky plaid scarves wrapped several times around your neck, the newer versions are softer and more fluid. Think cashmere, lightweight wool and beautiful woven wraps that drape rather than overwhelm you.
Wear one across your shoulders like a shawl, drape it over one shoulder, tie it in front, or let it hang loosely over a coat.
6. Soft Knit and Cashmere Scarves

Of course, once the temperature drops, we still need something warm!
Ribbed cashmere, brushed knits and softly textured scarves are always beautiful for fall and winter. The difference now is that the shapes and styling are simpler.
A gorgeous solid color can be especially chic. Cream, camel, chocolate brown, burgundy and rich jewel tones are easy to wear and add a beautiful shot of color to a fall coat.
How to Wear a Scarf in 2026 Without Looking Dated
You don’t need to learn ten fancy scarf knots. In fact, the simplest ways of wearing a scarf are often the most modern.
Here are a few easy ways to do it.
Drape It Over One Shoulder

This is one of my favorite looks because it feels elegant but not fussy.
Take a large silk scarf, wrap or stole and casually drape it across your shoulders, letting one side fall over your shoulder. It looks especially chic over a blazer, simple sweater or dress.
Don’t worry about making it perfectly symmetrical. A little looseness is part of the look.
Tie a Silk Scarf Loosely at Your Neck

A small or medium silk scarf looks fresh again when it’s tied simply.
Fold it into a triangle or narrow band, wrap it once around your neck and make a loose knot slightly off-center. You can also tuck the ends inside the neckline of a sweater or jacket.
The trick is not to make it too tight or too perfect.
Wear a Scarf with an Interesting Jacket or Blazer

This is such an easy way to wear a printed scarf if you haven’t worn one in years.
Tie or drape a silk scarf at your neck, then tuck the ends inside your blazer or jacket, or better yet leave it out if it works. You get a beautiful bit of color and print near your face and a chic look.
It’s also a great way to wake up a basic navy, camel, cream or brown jacket.
Wear it Like a Tie

This modern way to wear a silk scarf looks super chic with an elegant leather jacket.
Knot your scarf like a tie, and let it hang straight down. Simple, but beautiful.
Let a Long Scarf Hang Loose
Sometimes the easiest styling is the best styling.
Simply drape a long scarf around the back of your neck and let both ends hang straight down. Those long vertical lines can be very flattering and give a sweater, blazer, dress or coat a little more interest.
You can also toss one end over your shoulder if you want a slightly more dramatic look.
Wear a Scarf as a Shawl

A large scarf can also become an extra layer.
Open it up and drape it across your shoulders over a dress, sweater or jacket. This works especially well with soft wool, cashmere and silk-blend scarves that have enough movement to fall nicely.
It’s practical, too. I love this idea for travel, restaurants, and chilly evenings when you don’t necessarily want another jacket.
Try a Scarf at Your Waist

This is one of the more fashion-forward ways that scarves are being worn in 2026.
A long silk scarf can be loosely tied at the waist or threaded through a couple of belt loops and allowed to hang down at the side. It adds color and movement to jeans or simple pants without adding another layer on top.
I wouldn’t tie it into a tight little bow. Keep it loose and relaxed.
How to Style a Scarf on Your Handbag

If you love the handbag scarf, you can still wear it. It’s an easy way to add color and pattern without wearing a scarf around your neck.
Choose a small silk square or a narrow scarf and tie it loosely around one handle of your bag. Let the ends hang naturally rather than making a perfect bow.
It’s especially pretty when your outfit is neutral, and the scarf picks up one or two of the colors you’re wearing.
Scarf Accessories
A scarf ring is another easy option, particularly if you love silk scarves but don’t want to fuss with tying them.
A simple gold or silver scarf ring holds your scarf in place and can look almost like a piece of jewelry. Keep the design simple so the scarf still feels modern.
A Few Scarf Styling Tricks to Keep It Looking Current

If you haven’t worn scarves for a while, don’t overthink it. The biggest change is that today’s scarf styling looks much more relaxed.
Skip complicated knots, huge amounts of fabric around your neck, and scarves that are perfectly matched to every color in your outfit.
Instead, let your scarf hang, drape, or knot naturally. It should look like you added it at the last minute because your outfit needed a little something extra.
And don’t be afraid of print. If you’re wearing mostly solid colors, a beautiful printed scarf near your face can be just what your outfit needs.
Caring for Your Scarves
A beautiful scarf can last for years, so it’s worth taking care of it.
Fold knit scarves rather than hanging them, so they don’t stretch. Store silk scarves flat or loosely rolled to help prevent deep creases. A little gentle steaming can freshen them up between wears.
Always check the care label before washing silk, wool or cashmere. Some scarves can be hand-washed, while others are best dry-cleaned.

I think scarves are one of the nicest trends to come back around because they’re easy, colorful, and don’t require changing your whole wardrobe. Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful scarf to make the jeans, sweater or blazer you already own feel new again.

Very helpful post! I’m curious about the knot of the Ferragamo scarf. It looks like a fresh and fun alternative to a square knot–and seems similar to the knot that I saw some women wearing on my trip to Portugal earlier this month. Any ideas where I could find out about it?
Hi SF, That looks like a classic ascot (or loose necktie) knot—very polished and timeless.
How to tie it:
Fold a square silk scarf into a long band, wrap it around your neck, cross the ends once at the front, then tie a soft single knot and gently loosen and arrange it so it drapes neatly down the center. Give it a try- very classy!
