How to Style a Lightweight Summer Cardigan after 50
When the weather is up and down, and it’s supposed to be spring, but it’s still a bit chilly, what do you wear? A jacket can feel kind of bulky, so how about a lightweight spring/summer cardigan? Today I’m sharing a cute linen cardigan from Talbots. Have a look and see how I styled it to look fresh and modern.
If you haven’t already noticed, bright, cheery colors are where it’s at this season. We’re seeing lots of bold mixes like pink with red and orange for a fun, playful vibe. These colors are as bright and clear as a spring garden and look fabulous when paired with white pants.

Florals are always popular this time of year but even more so when they’re styled the right way. A floral ruffle neck top like this is a great starting piece for an outfit. You can see the cardigan has a fringe hem which is a popular trend right now. I like that it’s a fine type of fringe, not overdone, and very classy. When a cardigan has too much fringe, it can steal the show and distract attention away from the rest of your look. My gorgeous Dean Davidson jewelry adds some fun sparkle to this look.
White jeggings are crisp and fresh this time of year, making these brights pop. Plus, I love how chic they are. These are nice and stretchy, and I love the summery crop leg and the way it highlights your ankles. I wore this look with a cute pair of square toe sandals which has a bit of a heel.
A straw bag adds a cute summer vibe. And don’t forget a great pair of sunglasses. I love these fine, double-bridge sunglasses with a bit of European flair! If you’re more particular about the style you choose, check out this post where I discuss how to pick out the perfect pair for your face shape.
Here’s that darling ruffle top. Small details like this make the difference.
Did you notice the gold belt? I’m crazy about this because it is always difficult to know what to wear with white jeans. A white belt seems too tacky, and a dark or black belt is too dark. Navy doesn’t work if you wear these colors, and tan seems a bit earthy. The gold is very chic and up levels this outfit.
There’s the look. Gorgeous! This is a lightweight acrylic cardigan but a long linen cardigan is also lightweight for spring and summer and will keep you cool.
Styling Tips for Wearing a Lightweight Cardigan During Spring and Summer
Have Some Fun!
You don’t always have to pair a lightweight cardigan over a pair of chic jeans and a timeless top—though it is a safe bet. Have some fun with your style and wear your cardigan over a fun summery sundresses, too. Because your cardigan is already flow, look for sundresses that maintain a tailored and structured shape. Keep it Slim Underneath
Though wide-leg jeans are trendy at the moment, you don’t want to wear them with a long flowy cardigan. Stick to slim capris or skinny jeans—pants that won’t flare out and add any bulk to your look. This keeps your outfit streamlined and cohesive.

Opt for Feminine Tops
Though florals complement the spring/summer vibe, you don’t have to wear florals with this cardigan if you don’t want to. Instead, look for pastels in similar tones—like lilac, peach, soft blue, pale yellow, or even mint green. This also works out since some of these colors are trending for this 2025 season!
How are you styling your cardigan this spring and summer season?
Spring is the perfect time to store away those thick winter coats and pull out the lightweight cardigans. There’s nothing that feels more refreshing than finally being able to show off your pastels, florals, and flowy fabrics!
