Look Pretty, Be Mysterious on Valentine’s Day
The famous Hollywood costume designer Edith Head once said: “A dress should be tight enough to show you’re a woman and loose enough to prove you’re a lady.” That’s especially true as we age when too tight, too short, or too much skin can make a woman over 40 look downright desperate. It’s always nice to have a little mystery.
My Valentine’s Day outfit is an excellent example of this. This year, I’m in the mood for pants. I want to wear something casual, lady-like, and a little bit sexy.
So I’ve taken a pair of skinny, dark burgundy jeans and paired them with this pretty ivory peplum sweater, a beautiful statement necklace, and killer heels for a romantic dinner look.
I’m not showing much skin, but I think this is still an alluring look. So, if you’d like to put together a sexy Valentine’s Day outfit that leaves a little more to the imagination, here are some things to keep in mind.
1. A Soft, Cozy Sweater with Stretch and Shape is Sensuous
Sweaters that follow the shape of your curves and are soft to the touch are very alluring because they call out to be touched. A peplum sweater like the one I’m wearing here highlights your waist and femininity.
2. Ruffles are Romantic
A slight ruffle is a beautiful way to whisper you’re interested. There’s nothing more feminine than a flirty frill.
3. Slip-On a Sexy Shoe
Heels are always sexy because they elongate your legs and accentuate your wiggle, but they don’t have to be crazy sky-high to be sexy. A small, slim kitten heel is also very inviting.
The vamp of the shoe also makes a difference. The deeper the shoe’s cut, the more skin that shows on the top of the foot, and the sexier the shoe. Every heard of toe cleavage? It’s a great way to look alluring in a subtle, grown-up way. It’s a great way to look sexy that you may not have thought of.
4. Pop On a Bit of Make-up (even if you usually don’t wear it)
A bit of make-up will bring color and life to your face and enhance your femininity. Throw on some pink lipstick and add some blush to your cheeks. After 40, our eyes can look bare and hollow. A touch of mascara goes a long way to making eyes look bright, youthful, and pretty.
5. Wear Clothing or Accessories with a Scalloped Edge
A delicate scalloped edge like the one you see on my shoes (above) creates a subtlely sexy feel.

6. Try an Off The Shoulder Top
You don’t have to wear a top cut down to attract your man’s attention. A cold shoulder top or a top that is slightly off the shoulder will give you lots of sex appeal. Your shoulders are sexier than you think and are a classy way to look alluring after 40.
7. Look Seductive in a Dress with a Slit or Zipper
A classic sheath dress, or a pencil skirt with a slit up the side or a zipper up the middle, looks chic and sensual too. You get a hint of things to come, tastefully, of course.

Deb, that is such a lovely outfit as it’s elegant yet comfy and stylish. Great post and much-needed topic in today’s “fashion” world, Your home is so lovely too, Deb! I love the elegant simplicity of it. You look like you “belong” in your own home in how you dress, too. :)
This excellent post helped me very much! I bookmarked the site and highly select categories everywhere I see here! I like the information, thank you.
The tops in this post are beautiful. I think women over forty need to be VERY careful about showing cleavage. Any is sagging, and it is just scary.
Hey! Happy Valentines Day, everyone….. I wish you all to have a lovely moment with your loved ones.
Hi Kim,
Yes, thanks! I celebrated in Toronto with my sweetie. I hope you had a good one too!
Deb
Thank you for speaking out about the way some (many?) women dress or undress. I am embarrassed whenever I see middle-aged women wearing a dress up to the wazoo that reveals bare thighs when they sit. It’s not attractive. Where are we going with this? What’s left to show?
Women have been conned into throwing away their power under the guise of wearing “fashion.” Mystery needs to make a comeback.
I like this post. Your outfit is beautiful & I appreciate your accompanying suggestions – great! Thank you.
