Wedding guest etiquette dictates that you shouldn’t wear white to a wedding because you don’t want to divert attention from the Bride. But what about lace? Most Bridal Dresses have at least some lace, if not a lot. Can a wedding guest wear a lace dress to a wedding without it looking like she is trying to steal the bride’s spotlight?
The answer is yes! You can wear lace, so long as you stay in within these guidelines:
1.Wear Colored Lace
White or ivory lace is a definite no-no, and cream lace is iffy depending on whether the bride is wearing cream. You are best to stick to a lace dress in a distinctly non-bridal color. For example, this powder blue sheath is soft and romantic, but cannot be confused with a wedding dress. Wear it with nude accessories, (not white) for a modern wedding guest look
2. Choose a Simple Dress with Clean Lines
If you have any concerns about looking bridal, then stick to a very simple silhouette. This 70’s inspired shift has clean modern lines. No wedding dress tiers, ruffles or crystal embellishments.
3. Keep it Short
A short to midi lace cocktail dress is fine. A long formal lace dress in any color is too similar to a bridal dress. Keep it short and guest like.
4. What about Black Lace?
One of my readers asked if she could wear a short black vintage lace dress to a wedding? It had been her mom’s. The answer is yes, black lace is acceptable for more formal evening wedding after 6 p.m. but be sure to choose something that is not too somber or too racy looking. A sophisticated black lace dress worn with some jewelry or a pop of color makes it look more festive.
If you want to wear a dark shade and feel black is too draining then try navy or dark plum or wine. They are just as slimming but a little more lively and won’t wash you out.
