How to Look Slimmer in Your Clothes

1. Create Long, Lean Lines
One of the simplest ways to appear slimmer is to create vertical lines in your outfit. Think open cardigans, blazers worn unbuttoned, long necklaces, and even subtle pinstripes. These elements draw the eye up and down, which helps elongate your frame.
Avoid anything that chops the body in half—wide belts, cropped tops, and contrasting colors that separate the upper and lower body. Continuity is key.

2. Wear One Color Head-to-Toe
Monochromatic dressing is elegant, elongating, and incredibly flattering. It doesn’t have to be black. A navy pantsuit, a soft camel knit set, or even an all-white ensemble in summer can all create that clean, column-like effect that instantly slims.
If you’re wearing separates, vary the textures—think silk with cashmere or denim with a structured jacket—to keep it visually interesting.

3. Define Your Waist
No matter your body type, emphasizing your waistline helps bring balance to your silhouette. Wrap dresses, tailored blazers, and belted coats are some of the most flattering pieces you can own.
And no, belts are not the enemy. The right belt, placed strategically at your natural waist (not your hips), can carve out shape—even if you feel like you don’t have much of one!

4. Know Where Your Hemlines Hit
Length matters. A top that hits too low on the hips can make you look boxy and shorter. Cropped jackets and tops that stop at the high hip tend to be more flattering, especially when paired with high-waisted trousers or skirts.
As for dresses and skirts, just above or just below the knee is often the sweet spot. Midi lengths can be elegant, but make sure they don’t hit at the widest part of your calf.

5. Choose Smoother Fabrics
Shiny, stiff, or bulky fabrics tend to add volume, especially in lighter colors. If you’re aiming for a sleeker silhouette, opt for matte, medium-weight fabrics that gently skim the body without clinging. Ponte, stretch crepe, and fluid knits are especially flattering.
Avoid overly clingy fabrics (jerseys can be tricky unless they’re lined) or those that hold their shape in the wrong places, like heavy brocades or stiff cotton.

6. Opt for a V-Neckline
If you want to create length and draw attention upward, V-necks and scoop necks are a smart choice. They elongate the neck and create an open, vertical space that slims the upper body.
This is especially helpful if you’re fuller in the bust or have broader shoulders.

7. Go High-Waisted
A high-rise pant or skirt can work wonders for elongating your legs and flattening the midsection. The key is finding a cut that sits comfortably at your natural waist and doesn’t dig in.
Tuck in your blouse, do a French tuck, or opt for a cropped sweater to show off the waistband. It’s a small adjustment that makes a big difference.

8. Pay Attention to Proportions
You don’t need to be a fashion editor to understand proportions, but you do need to use them to your advantage. If you’re wearing a voluminous top, balance it with a slimmer bottom. And if you’re wearing wide-leg pants, pair them with a sleek, tucked-in blouse or fitted knit.
The goal is always visual balance. When proportions are off, it throws the whole outfit out of sync—and can make you appear wider or shorter than you are.

9. Don’t Fear Tailoring
Off-the-rack rarely fits anyone flawlessly. That’s not your body’s fault. It’s the garment. The most transformative piece of fashion advice I can give you? Get your clothes tailored. That blazer that’s too boxy? Take it in at the waist. Those trousers that bunch at the ankle? Hem them.
A little tailoring turns “just okay” into fabulous and creates a custom fit that flatters your figure perfectly!

10. Use Color Placement Wisely
Strategic use of color can reshape how your body looks. Want to minimize your lower half? Try a darker pant with a lighter or brighter top. Want to define your waist? Use contrast to your advantage—a black belt over a camel dress, for example.
Color blocking can also create a slimmer illusion—look for dresses with darker side panels or vertical blocks of color that narrow the torso.

11. Nude Shoes Are Your Secret Weapon
If you want longer legs without the pain of high heels, nude shoes are your best friend. Choose a shade close to your skin tone to extend the leg line visually. A low-block heel or kitten heel is all you need for lift and polish.
Avoid ankle straps unless they’re minimal or match your skin tone—they can visually cut off the leg and shorten your silhouette.

12. Posture Is the Finishing Touch
It doesn’t matter how well your outfit fits if you’re slouching. Good posture makes you look taller, leaner, and more confident. Stand tall, shoulders back, chin up. It’s the simplest “style hack” of all—and it works to make you look slimmer instantly!

I saw a tip somewhere that the best way to determine the proper placement of a belt to emphasize your waistline is to bend your arm and hold it to your side (this makes the most sense when you’re wearing a dress or a top with a side tie, obviously). Where your elbow hits is your natural waistline. As a short-waisted Apple, this has helped A LOT for me to feel more proportional!
Hi Liz! WOW, I just tried it and it works!! That’s a good one. I must borrow that at some point. Thanks again!!!! Cheers, Deb
What a great set of tips. I do everything on your list except #7, because I am naturally very short waisted. I have to balance where my top hemline is so I look like I have at least a little torso!
Hi Carolyn,
Makes sense. It sounds like you have a great sense of your body type which is one of the keys to looking Fabulous After 40!
