Heading to Spain This Summer? Here’s What You Should Pack and Wear
Have you ever been to Spain? I’ve been many times, and can tell you it’s a gorgeous, culturally rich place to visit. This popular summer destination is filled with sunny beaches, historic cities, delicious food, and, of course, incredible shopping!
But knowing exactly what you need for your trip can be tricky if it’s your first time. Here’s a complete rundown of what you need to pack (and wear!) for a stylish and comfortable trip to sunny Spain this summer.
What to Pack and Wear in Spain for Summer
What is the weather in Spain in the summer?
Spain is famous for its hot, sunny weather during the summer months. From June to August, (the months I always go) temperatures often shoot up to above 80°F and sometimes hit 90°F or higher, especially in southern regions like Andalusia or cities like Madrid and Seville. Even coastal areas such as Barcelona, Valencia, or Malaga can feel extremely hot and humid.

Casual Outfits and Sightseeing
You’ll probably do a lot of walking in Spain, especially if you’re exploring cities or historical sites. Pack shoes that you can walk comfortably in all day. I recommend a pair of cute sandals with good arch support for daytime walks, plus a pair of comfortable sneakers for sightseeing or longer days out. Be sure to work them in before you leave home!

Spain’s beaches are stunning, and you’ll definitely want to spend some time soaking up the sun. Pack at least two swimsuits, so you always have a dry one ready. Cover-ups are also essential; choose a lightweight kaftan, a breezy sarong, or even just an oversized linen shirt. This makes moving from the beach to a cafe or a walk along the promenade easy and comfortable.

Evening and Dinner Outfits
Spaniards love dressing up, especially when going out for dinner or enjoying the nightlife. Pack at least one or two outfits that are a bit dressier. Think flowy summer dresses, jumpsuits, or elegant tops with skirts or nice pants.
Even though summer days in Spain are hot, evenings can sometimes feel cooler, especially along the coast or in mountainous regions. Pack one or two lightweight cardigans, shawls, or thin jackets. These layers are easy to throw in your bag and will keep you cozy when temperatures dip slightly at night.
What are the best shoes to wear in Spain?
Spain’s streets and cobblestones can be tough on feet. Pick sandals with good support, like Birkenstocks or walking sandals. Cute sneakers are also perfect—especially white ones that match every outfit. Espadrilles are also a classic Spanish shoe that adds a stylish touch without sacrificing comfort.
Other Items to Pack for Spain:
The Spanish summer sun is powerful, so sunscreen is essential. Choose a sunscreen with high SPF that’s easy to apply. This one is my favorite. Don’t forget to reapply throughout the day, especially if you’re spending lots of time outdoors. Carry a reusable water bottle (this one collapses for easy packing!) so you can stay hydrated as you explore.
Easy Vacation Outfit Ideas for Spain
To help make your packing even easier, here are some quick outfit ideas for common things you might do in Spain. I’ve gone with a color palette of neutrals, blue and of course a pop of Spanish Red!
What to Wear for a Day of Sightseeing in Spain:
By sticking to a few colors, it makes it easier to mix and match clothes which means you don’t have to bring as much.
What to Wear to Dinner at a Restaurant in Spain:
A breezy midi sundress is perfect to wear to dinner. I love Spainsh Paella ( rice, Saffron, Vegetables and chicken), and a glass of cold, fruity Sangria. Don’t forget cute Sandals and colorful jewelry. And if you didn’t know, dinner is late – between 9p.m-11p.m.
What to Wear When Visiting Spanish Historical Sites (churches, palaces):
Linen and Cotton pants, skirts and dresses with sandals keep you cool and looking chic! You’ll need to cover your shoulder and knees if you go into churches so dress modestly and bring a wrap for your shoulders.
What to Wear for a Beach Day in Mallorca or Costa del Sol:
Hit the Beach in these sexy swimsuits when it’s Hot, Hot, Hot! I l love the off the shoulder ruffle neckline on the lively print swimsuit because it has that flamenco dancer flare! And of course the bold red reminds me of a bullfight! Ole´!
