Fall 2009 – Sparkle and Shine

Things are lighting up as sparkle, shine and glitz shimmer onto the fashion scene.

How does a grown up gal over 40 handle the new razzle dazzle without looking like a tacky Christmas tree?

By treading gently…. Here are 7 subtle ways to  get the sparkle and shine look and look fabulous after 40.

Brooch:

If you are not big on sparkle, but want to look in style, then try a little bit of jewelry detail on your outfit. This strategically placed brooch adds an elegant touch of sparkle and accents your waist beautifully.(Saks)

Sequins update Traditional:

Another way to add sparkle in a classy way is to to look for pieces that say traditional, but sparkle modern with sequins. This classic camel cardigan is fun, but not over the top. (Nordstrom)

Shiny Fabrics:

The easiest way to shine this fall is to buy a satin blouse. Choose one in a gorgeous color to add life to aging skin and hair. (Saks)

Beading:

Beading is always fun, but too much all over is dated and aging. This chic cocktail dress keeps the beading at the collar,  drawing the eye upward and putting the focus on your face. (Saks)

Metallics:

Metallic shoes, handbags or a metallic leather jacket is another subtle way to get the shiny look without overdoing it. This sporty copper leather jacket is understated and  chic. (Saks)

All out Sequins:

A caution- Sequins , done wrong, can easily look cheap and tacky. If you want to do all out sequences, such as a sequined jacket we suggest you look for a well constructed, good quality jacket ,like this one. (A loose fitting sequined jacket on a soft round 40+ body can make you look like you are wearing a big glittery blanket). Black, dark or neutral colored sequins are always classier than bright ones like red or electric blue, which tend to look more costume-like. (Saks)

  2. Hi Fora,
Have you bought anything yet for fall yet?? We are just curious and would love to know what and where…
    Cheers!

  3. I love the example you show from Nordstrom. The soft sweater with sequins is certainly a way to have “wow” factor and can qualify as an ageless classic item for the long haul.I see it with a white tee shirt and jeans–as well as a wide leg brown or charcoal satin pant for dressier occasions. TSE (admittedly a high cost, but quality line) has a charcoal version that I covet.

    Hi Glam Girls,

I live on the other side of the world where we only get 2 seasons: rain or shine – mostly shine! Really glad that we don’t have to buy attire according to the seasons – they can be worn the whole year round. :-)

I’m going to recommend your sites to my girlfriends and relatives because your tips are still applicable no matter where we live!

    Hi Ladies! Happy Fall!

Oooooo, I really like the ‘classy yet sassy’ look of of these Sparkle and Shine ideas for fall. The other day at the local consignment boutique I found two wonderful treasures in bright Velour fabric with lace and beading at the neckline. One is a deep pink and the other is a sassy moss green. With plunging necklines I plan to wear them wit a basic black tee and jeans. For a dressier look: tops and silk tee with a pair of black pants or even a Velour skirt for the holidays. ~~ I felt like they were kind of over the top for me, so probably pretty good choices to liven up the fall/winter wardrobe. ;o)

    Thanks for some great ideas.

Thes!e ideas are wonderful – all of them are good, but I especially love the idea of the brooch at the waist of the simple black dress. So elegant.
