WHAT TO WEAR

What to Wear to Lunch with Your Girlfriends

When a bunch of your girlfriends invite you to a casual lunch, your first thought after saying yes is likely, what will I wear?

You’d think that choosing something to wear for lunch with the girls would be easy. After all, they care about you, not how you dress. But, it can be a tad stressful.

Naturally, you want to look nice for them. Dressing well is a sign of respect and good manners. Still, more importantly, you want to feel fabulous in your skin- not too dressed up like you are trying to impress, but dressed up enough to look and feel modern, stylish, confident, and like you’ve still got it after all these years. It’s more like dressing to impress yourself!

Whether you’re meeting the girls at the golf club or just nipping over to the mall with your bestie for a quick bite, getting together with friends is a celebration and a fun reason to express yourself.  If you’re stuck on what to wear, why not try a little of what I like to call Girlfriend Glam?

I think of Girlfriend Glam as a casual outfit with a touch of glam, elevated but not overdressed.

Girlfriend Glam is

  • casual
  • comfy – This is downtime with the girls.  You want to feel relaxed, and keep it simple because you will likely be sitting for a few hours chatting over coffee.
  • a little fashion-forward but not too serious
  • a shot of color ( this get together is a party of sorts- color is playful and fun)
  • includes a fabulous bag and shoes
  • a touch of glam- beautiful lipstick, unique jewelry, a trendy accessory, or one luxurious piece.

Girlfriend Glam is not

  • overly dressy
  • ornate
  • serious, business-like & stiff,
  • plain, baggy or frumpy

Girlfriend Glam is simply about punching up your casual personal style. It can be as simple as wearing a cute, new top or the the latest “it”  jeans. Or, it can be the perfect time to share something really special.

For example, go ahead and wear those slighltly wild shoes you bought on a whim, that have been sitting at the back of your closet for far too long. Or, throw on those super expensive designer sunglasses you save for special occasions. Love your new burgundy leather pants? Show them off to your friends, fashionista! They’ll be a great conversation starter. This is a time to enjoy your favorite things, have fun, and feel good.

Above and below are some fab looks for a spur-of-the-moment bite with your best friend or a casual, long overdue lunch with the girls.

More Lunch with a Girlfriend Style Recipes if you are stuck

Jeans + Statement Top: You can’t go wrong. Try a modern style like bootcut or cropped straight leg. The darker the wash, the more slimming and elegant. Try a satin button-up or chunky knit half-tucked.

Wide Leg Pants – The New it Pant: Slouchy, flowy wide-leg pants and a fitted top and a cute blazer or cardigan.

Sweater Dress: Simple cut that flatters your figure and cute booties or tall boots. One of my favorites for fall is a sweater dress because it says relaxed and comfy. You’ll look beautiful with your besties in this outfit! Have Fun!

Jumpsuit- So comfy and cool looking: Be different.

Casual Pants: with a tee and a blazer or a chunky oversize sweater or cardigan

When you look good, you feel good and life is much more fun. The most important thing to remember when getting together for a casual lunch with your girlfriends is to be yourself, wear what feels like you, and own your look!

  1. What nail color do you think is good for an outfit like this? I have a few pieces in that coral shade; could I go with a coral nail polish or keep it neutral?

    1. Hi Linda, I think either would be fine. Colorful nail polish is popular these days, but I find the polish seems to last longer if you go with a neutral, like a soft nude or blush.

  2. It’s winter Downunder (Melbourne, Australia), but your website is fabulous in any season! These outfits are gorgeous. I am a committed ‘capsule dresser.’ You are a breath of fresh for us over 40’s (actually over 50). thank you, Robyn
