What to Wear to a Rock Concert Over 40 or 50

Your teenage years spent listening to head-banging music while lying in the dark may be far behind you. But that doesn’t mean your soul still doesn’t belong to rock and roll.

If your favorite band is still going strong and you have tickets to see them, what do you wear to look like the cool rocker you’ve always been?

Here are some ideas for what to wear to a rock concert when you are over 40 or 50 or more!

what to wear to a rock concert - leather moto jacket and jeans

Wear a Leather Moto Jacket with Jeans

A cool leather moto jacket paired with jeans is an easy, no-brainer combo for a rock concert. Whether you wear slim, bootcut, flare, dark, light wash, or ripped jeans; it doesn’t matter. Whatever suits your body type is the best pair for you.

A black leather moto jacket is the everlasting symbol of rock and roll. However, now that you are older, you may find you have outgrown it.

Black leather can be harsh and aging next to mature skin, so feel free to go with a more sophisticated shade like burgundy, dark green, dark brown or taupe.

Add Edgy Accessories

Look for tops and accessories with cutouts, studs, or other rock’ n’ roll touches. To complete your upscale rocker look, add a moto-style designer bag and chunky black booties.

What to wear to a rock concert - satin blouse, jeans, leather pants, leather jacket

Slip into a Satin Blouse and Leather Pants

Sexy satin combined with leather or denim is pure rock n’roll.  Keep your color palette dark and moody to look classy and a little rebellious.

What to Wear to a Rock Concert - sequins

Sequins, Tulle, and Feathers are Glam Rock

If you like to rock and roll all night and party every day, be sure to wear some sequins when you go to see your favorite band. A sequin jacket or shirt makes a glamorous starting point for an elevated concert outfit. Not to mention, you’ll be a standout under the wild light show!

Rhinestones, tulle, feathers, and beads are also part of the glam rock look, so don’t miss a beat. Be bold, have fun, and rock on.

Rock concert style - Concert Jeans & tee

Play it Cool in a Concert Tee

This last look may feel a little corny for some, but hey, it’s a rock concert. Cheer on your favorite rockers in a band concert tee. Wear your favorite faded wide-leg jeans and dress up your outfit with a classy black blazer. Finish off the look with leather booties and a statement belt with a heavy metal buckle. It’s good, old-time rock n’ roll—simple, but it does the trick.

concert top - black cut out tee

Cut-out Tops have a Rocker Vibe

They’re urban, edgy and perfect for a rock concert. Slip on a cut-out top that has a peek-a-boo window at the neck, shoulders, or arms. Then wiggle in to your tightest jeans,  and grab your air guitar!  You’re with the band now.

Rock concert style - leather leggings and a long top

Rock It in Faux Leather Leggings

Black leggings with a long top or tee are another great way to get a grown-up rocker chic look. Plus, you will feel super comfy all night long.

You can wear quality black knit leggings, or faux leggings, which will give you the best heavy-metal vibe.

Finish with an inky black crossbody bag and comfy black slides.

  1. Here’s a challenge for you, maybe! How about an outdoor classic rock concert on the Forth of July weekend? Oh did I mention it’s in Florida? Hahaha. I would love to get your opinion on this.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Shel, Classic rock, July 4th? Sounds like a red white and blue kind of occasion to me! Is it indoors or out? I thinking denim of course, a cute dress and denim jacket like this:https://rstyle.me/+b7LYn6ob6o4b3I9iXVFydA Or white jeans if it’s not outdoors and you are sitting on the ground:https://rstyle.me/+8u2sDdwSbH7WeacHfUdx-g, I like this top too:https://rstyle.me/+qOMPYS7ZuEK6hseJUzIlJA, another cute top in red:https://rstyle.me/+euK7URJfjMHMdaOQSrjj9w,or it is July 4th!! https://rstyle.me/+Jv0j9ITEJ5wU5K92KwuAGw Have a blast!

  2. Hi Deborah,
Your post is the first thing that came up on my google search for “what to wear to a rock concert over 50”. I think that you are right about black leather for middle-aged women. I guess it doesn’t work anymore for the older set because our features harden with age and black leather is masculine, which (especially when worn) close to the face can make it look harder. I try to avoid cliche rock and roll details on clothes. I feel that I am more sophisticated and complex than that. I like unusual, visually attractive jewelry, no tears on dresses, black pants, and fabric tops with an attractive cut and pattern. Keep the shoes black and avoid anything that makes the foot look like a hoof. I think many “bootie” styles make feet look like hooves. Thanks for your input and for inviting me. :)

    1. Hi Alma, I love when you say, “I feel that I am more sophisticated and complex than that.” YES!! I agree that women our age should be all thinking this. Why stop trying to compete with teenagers? Thanks so much for dropping by and delivering that wise nugget!! Cheers, Deborah

  3. Deborah, thank you for creating these themed posts. Would you consider doing a few sets for ladies attending other types of concerts such as Jazz or Classic music events? Another idea might be creating capsule wardrobe items for each style personality — not every person finds a white button-up shirt or navy jacket essential.

    Thanks,

    1. Hi Carla,
Excellent suggestions! Thank you, I couldn’t agree more. Essential vary depending on your style. I will put these ideas on my to-do list! Cheers, Deborah
