Chunky Loafers: From “No Way” to “Okay & How to Style Them

You know those trends that pop up, and your first reaction is a hard no? That was me with chunky loafers.

I remember seeing them for the first time—those heavy, black, masculine-looking shoes with thick soles and funky vibes—and thinking, “Nope. Not for me” ( even though they are in style.)

How to Style Chunky Loafers

They felt clunky, serious, and honestly,  a little frumpy. Definitely not my taste. My style is a little more elegant and feminine, and I just didn’t see how those shoes would fit into my wardrobe—or any wardrobe, really—once you’re past your 20s or 30s.

So, I wrote them off. Trend dismissed. Let the Gen Z girls have their moment. Then something interesting happened.

I started seeing chunky loafers getting a bit of a makeover. Suddenly, they weren’t all black and shiny and stiff. They were showing up in lighter colors—creamy neutrals, soft blushes, metallics, warm tans. I noticed woven styles, suede finishes, and even knits. The toothy rubber soles were shrinking. Many chunky loafers were looking more like a cross between a platform sneaker and a loafer—more playful than serious, more casual than corporate.

These were chunky loafers with a twist, and they actually caught my eye.

At first, I just admired them on the shelf or in passing on Instagram. Then I saw a few women trying them on in stores—women my age. And I have to say, I started to come around. When styled the right way, they looked fresh, fun, and surprisingly modern. Less “frumpy” and more “cool and comfy.”

So yes, I changed my tune. Not about all chunky loafers—some are still too much for me—but about the right pair—especially the “chunky light” ones, as I like to call them. Think of a thicker sole, but not one over the top. A little attitude, but still refined enough to feel like you. So I bought a pair,  and here they are! Chunky loafers, but on the light side of chunky, and I love them!

Are Chunky Loafers Comfortable?

Chunky Loafers, like mine, are very comfortable.  These textured pink ones are from Vivonic, a comfort shoe brand famous for its built-in VIO MOTION technology footbed that has contoured arch support, with shock-absorbing cushion and a deep heel cup that gives you stability and forefront flexibility. Other comfort brands with chunky loafers are Dr. Scholl’s, Clarks, and Naturalizer.

How to Break In Chunky Loafers

They do stretch, so if you want to break them in, you can wear them with a thick sock for a day. This is very important, especially if you plan to take them on a trip.  Most casual, chunky loafers feel like sneakers but look more like an uptown loafer, which brings us to the next question.

Are Chunky Loafers Business Casual? Professional?

They can be. My chunky loafers, for example,  come in several colors and finishes and would fit right into a casual workplace since they have a classic look and aren’t too clunky. Neutral colors like black, tan, gray, and brown would read more conservative, which might work better in some casual workplaces. Some of the heavier, embellished, or more colorful chunky loafers might be a little too casual or statement-making, depending on the type of business you are in (for example,  finance).

However, I could see a big, chunky, colorful loafer being worn at an interior design office or if you worked in a graphic arts place.  In a casual, relaxed, creative workplace, they can be professional.

What to Wear with Chunky Loafers?

Jeans, especially straight-leg jeans, which are trending, come to mind, but you might be surprised that you can also wear them with casual pants,  skirts, dresses, and even shorts. We’re going to get into that. I’ve created some chunky loafer outfits below to illustrate.

How to Style Chunky Loafers

So now let’s talk about how to wear them. Chunky loafers are definitely not your typical ballet flat or delicate mule. They’ve got presence, and they can feel a bit clunky if you don’t balance them out. But with a little styling know-how, they can absolutely work for women over 40, 50, 60—and beyond.

How to Style Chunky Loafers

Here are a few tips for pulling them off:

1. Show a Little Ankle

This makes all the difference. Chunky loafers can look heavy, so you want to show some skin to break things up. Try ankle-length pants cropped jeans, or just roll your hem. A little ankle helps the look feel lighter and more flattering.

2. Stick with Slim or Structured Pieces

Balance is everything. Because chunky loafers are on the heavier side, keep the rest of your outfit a little more tailored. Think straight-leg jeans with a sleek blouse or a fitted blazer. Too much volume all over can make your outfit feel bulky and your feet heavy.

3. Pick Softer Materials

If the traditional black leather loafer feels too harsh, look for ones in suede, nubuck, or even knit. Woven or perforated details help, too. These textures feel more approachable and relaxed — perfect for everyday wear.

4. Try Them with Dresses or Skirts

I was surprised by this one, but chunky loafers can actually work really well with a short casual dress. It doesn’t have to be a mini dress, but just at or above the knee looks sporty.  A dress gives it that cool contrast — feminine and masculine, polished and playful. I like the idea of a short shirtdress or t-shirt dress with chunky loafers.  Add a denim jacket, and you’re set. If you are a boho gal, you may prefer a flowy midi with loafers for an artsy, funky look.

5. Ease In with a “Chunky Light” Style

If you’re still unsure, look for slightly chunky loafers — just enough to be on trend but not over the top. Maybe a lug sole that’s not too thick or a platform that gives you lift without too much bulk. These styles are easier to work into your wardrobe. Some women also like the chunky backless loafer mules with any kind of pants.

So… Should You Try Them?

If you had asked me a year ago, I would’ve said skip them. But now? I say, maybe. If you find a pair that feels fun and works with your style, go for it. Just remember: you don’t have to love or wear every trend. But every once in a while, it’s worth taking a second look.

Fashion should be fun. Even a little surprising.

And if a chunky loafer makes you feel modern and confident (and keeps your feet happy)? That sounds like a win to me.

Wondering Where to Buy Chunky Loafers?

I’ve seen lots ( the type I like and the chunky black style) at Nordstrom, and Macy’s.

Or, if you are more interested in a chunky wedge sneaker that is similar to a chunky loafer, you can read about it here.

  1. Hi Deborah, I am with you – a chunky loafer looks so heavy! – but the Vionic ones look lighter. In general, loafers read very masculine to me, so I tend to avoid them. A couple of years ago, I picked up a pair of leopard print loafers (traditional, not chunky); the print made them look more “cute” than “manly.” And I do love wearing them. :) For these chunkier loafers, I love that pink one on you; they look playful and sneaker-like. I think it’s the color choice that really helps; rather than black or brown, light color changes the whole look. Your tips on how to wear them were really helpful, too, because I was having a hard time understanding how to wear them without looking like having 2 cement blocks for feet. So… all that said, I took the plunge and ordered the Vionic in the gold shimmer. It was that color, or the cream or sand. Ultimately, my love of bling won out. Here’s hoping they work with my style aesthetic!

    1. Hi Carolyn, That’s exciting. I always love a gold shoe!! They’re very “mild” so I’m sure you will love them. I love mine. Thanks for dropping by. Cheers, Deb
