Have you noticed how dark jeans are suddenly everywhere again? After years of light and faded denim, all this deep, inky blue feels like a very nice change!
I’ve been wearing everything from wide-leg and bootcut jeans to slim ankle and barrel styles. Yes, barrel jeans! I’ve tried a few pairs, and I thought it would be helpful to show you how they actually look on me, how I’m wearing them, and which styles you might want to try.

Are Dark Wash Jeans in Style in 2026?
Yes, dark wash jeans are back for Fall 2026. This isn’t one of those trends where you have to buy a very specific style to look current. Dark indigo is showing up in just about every jean shape. They’ve always been my favorite because they look more elegant than any light wash, and the dark wash makes you look slimmer too.

How to Style Dark Wash Wide-Leg Jeans
Let’s start with wide-leg jeans because these have become a big part of my wardrobe.
My Ruti Palazzo jeans have a beautiful dark wash and a nice wide leg without looking sloppy. I think that’s important. There’s a big difference between a wide-leg jean that drapes nicely and one that just looks like there’s too much fabric! This brand is new to me; they’ve found that sweet spot, and I think the quality is excellent too! High marks for these jeans.
When I wear a wider jean, I like to show a little shape on top. That doesn’t mean you have to wear something tight or tuck everything in. Even a shorter sweater or a little front tuck can be enough to define your waist and balance things out.
Wide legs can take a little getting used to, especially if you’ve been wearing slimmer jeans for years. I admit, I was slow to adapt. I have more tips on how to style wide-leg jeans over 40, including what tops and shoes look best with them.

How I’m Wearing Dark Wash Barrel Jeans
Let’s talk barrel jeans because I know some of you are still giving them the side-eye!
I was curious about them too, so I’ve been trying the Bella Stretch Barrel Jeans from Quince in Obsidian Blue. The leg curves out and then comes back in at the ankle, which can look a little odd when you first see them on the hanger. But put them on, and it’s a different story.
I actually prefer barrel jeans in a dark wash. The deep indigo makes the curved shape less obvious and a little easier to wear. I also keep the rest of my outfit fairly simple because there’s already enough going on with the jeans.

How to Wear Dark Wash Slim-Leg Jeans
Here’s something I want to make very clear: You can still wear slim jeans! There’s so much talk about wide-leg and barrel jeans right now that it’s easy to feel like your slimmer jeans are suddenly “out.”
These J.Jill Authentic Fit Slim-Leg Jeans are a classic shape, and I’m wearing them with an elegant taupe cable-knit sweater. This is exactly when I like a slimmer jean. The sweater has some volume, so the narrower leg keeps the outfit balanced.
Always remember, if you go narrow on the bottom, go a little wider on the top to look modern, and vice versa.
I also love this light taupe with dark denim. It’s soft and warm and really lets that rich blue stand out.
If you’re ready to move beyond skinny jeans but aren’t quite sold on a wide or barrel leg, I’ve also rounded up some of my favorite alternatives to skinny jeans for women over 40

How to Style Dark Wash Bootcut Jeans
I’ve always liked a good bootcut. There’s something about that little flare at the bottom that makes your legs look longer, especially with the right shoes.
This dark wash, patch pocket pair from Talbots are knit denim, which makes them extra soft and gives you more breathing room at the waist. They have the look of jeans, but much more all-over give, and I’m all for that!
I’m wearing them with a cozy cashmere sweater, and I like how the paisley print livens up the dark denim without making the outfit feel busy.
The one thing I’d watch with bootcut jeans is the length. I like mine almost to the floor with just the toe of my shoe peeking out. That’s what gives you that long, lean look.

How to Wear Dark Wash Ankle Jeans
Are ankle jeans still in style? I get asked this a lot. Yes, they are, and I still wear them a lot. My Chico’s Girlfriend Slim Ankle Jeans are an easy, everyday style, and I’ve paired them with this dusty pink top (a big color this fall) and perky utility jacket.
We tend to automatically reach for cream, camel, gray, and other neutrals with dark jeans, but you don’t have to. Dark indigo works almost like navy, so it’s gorgeous with pink, red, green, lavender, and plenty of other colors.
I also like ankle jeans at this time of year because they let you show off your shoes. They’re especially handy during early fall when it’s too warm for boots, but you’re ready to move on from your summer clothes.

How to Style Dark Wash Straight-Leg Jeans
If you’re not sure about wide-leg jeans and barrel jeans aren’t calling your name, you really can’t go wrong with a straight leg.
My other Quince pair is the Bella Stretch Straight Leg, which is much more of an everyday jean. There’s no exaggerated shape to figure out, which makes them easy to style with things you probably already have hanging in your closet.
If you haven’t bought jeans in a while and want something that feels updated without being too trendy, I’d start with dark straight-leg jeans. And of course, with Quince jeans, the price is right at only $50!
Straight-leg jeans are one of those styles that are easy to wear once you get the proportions right. I have a whole guide on how to wear straight-leg jeans if you want more outfit ideas.
Shoes can be the tricky part with this cut, so you may also want to see my guide to what shoes to wear with straight-leg jeans.
What Makes Dark Wash Jeans Look Dressier?
Not all dark-wash jeans look the same. If I want jeans I can dress up, I look for a clean, deep blue without much fading across the thighs or whiskering around the hips.
Some dark washes come with stitching that blends into the denim rather than bright gold or orange stitching that stands out. The cleaner the jeans, the dressier they look. It’s a small detail, but it makes a difference.

Which Dark Wash Jean Style Is Best for You?
With so many jean shapes out there, it’s easy to wonder which one you’re supposed to be wearing. I wouldn’t worry about that. Here’s a quick guide for you:
- If you like the long, relaxed look that’s popular right now, try a wide-leg.
- If you’re ready for something new and a little fashion-forward, you might surprise yourself with a barrel jean.
- Straight-leg jeans are a great middle ground and probably the easiest place to start if you’re updating your denim.
- Bootcuts are fabulous when you want that long-legged look, and there’s nothing wrong with sticking with a slim leg or slim ankle jean if that’s the silhouette you love.
- Slim Ankle jeans are the new version of skinny jeans if you like a closer-to-the-body fit.
Fit is just as important as the shape of the leg. If your jeans tend to look a little flat in the back, I have some specific tips and recommendations in my guide to the best jeans for a flat butt.
Finding the right pair can still take some trial and error, so I’ve also put together my favorite places to shop for flattering jeans that fit women over 50

How to Keep Your Dark Wash Jeans Looking Dark
One little downside to dark jeans is that they can fade. I wash mine inside out in cold water with other dark colors and try not to wash them more than I need to. I also skip the dryer when I can. It really helps keep that deep indigo from fading too fast.
Which Pair Would You Wear?
Trying all these different jean styles has reminded me that sometimes you have to get into the fitting room and experiment! A pair that looks strange on the hanger can be surprisingly flattering, while the style you were sure you’d love may not be quite right.
Still on the hunt for a great pair? You can also take a look at some of my favorite jeans from Nordstrom for more styles I’ve tried and recommend.
I’d love to know which pair you like best on me. Are you still a slim-leg gal, loving the wider styles, or are you brave enough to give those barrel jeans a go? Send me a photo. I’d love to see you in your jeans: info@fabulousafter40.com
