Talbots Fall Transition Outfits for Women Over 50
Late August into September is a tricky time for getting dressed. Some days still feel like summer, other days hint at fall, and it’s hard to know what makes sense to wear.
That’s why I like having a few transitional pieces ready before summer’s even over. They take the guesswork out of getting dressed as the weather starts to change.
Talbots is one of my favorite brands for this in-between season. Their early fall pieces feel like fall without being heavy. I’ve pulled together a few outfits that work right now and will carry you easily into fall.
Outfit 1: Cropped Ankle Jeans with a Striped Puff-Sleeve Sweatshirt
There’s something so fresh about cropped ankle jeans paired with a tan-and-cream striped short-sleeve sweatshirt— especially with sweet details like puff sleeves and tiny buttons at the shoulder.
It’s the perfect balance of casual and polished, great for a Saturday coffee run or lunch with friends. Style with neutral sneakers now, and swap to loafers to dress it up a touch.

Outfit 2: Striped Midi Dress with a Twist-Tie Waist
This striped midi dress is effortless, early-fall style. Diagonal stripes in cognac, black, and cream feel warm and autumnal, while the twist-tie waist flatters without fuss.
The side slit adds movement, making it perfect for a casual dinner or weekend get-together. Wear with flat sandals now; add ankle boots when temps dip.

Outfit 3: Bone-Colored Flare Jeans with a Leopard Print Twin Set
Flare jeans are back in a big way, and this bone-colored pair is such a chic, modern twist. I’ve paired them with a fine-knit leopard tank and matching cardigan – a coordinated look that feels polished but easy.
Neutrals keep the print sophisticated, while the flares elongate your legs. Wear with block-heel sandals now; switch to heeled boots later.

Outfit 4: Cropped Cognac Utility Pants with a Pebble-Print Tee
Utility pants are everywhere this season, and this cognac-colored cropped pair hits the early-fall note perfectly. The roomy pockets feel relaxed, while the cut stays polished.
I’ve styled them with a cream-and-cognac pebble-print tee that’s fresh, modern, and breezy enough for warm afternoons. Finish with sneakers or low block-heel sandals now; add a lightweight jacket for cool mornings.

Final Thoughts
If fall weather is all over the place where you live, these light-but-fallish pieces will carry you through that in-between stretch beautifully. Build your early fall capsule with a couple of easy dresses, a great pair of cropped jeans, one trending denim silhouette (hello, flares), and a pair of utility pants you can dress up or down—you’ll be set for anything the forecast throws your way.

I love the brown suede handbag in Saturdays blog. Can you tell me about it?
Hi Judith, I bought that bag last summer in Austria. It’s an underrated Italian brand called Coccinelle. In the U.S. I could only find the same one in that color in leather:https://rstyle.me/+Mqa-sCEDN_PTbGp23_5IMQ but I did find it in dark brown suede too:https://rstyle.me/+IlUMFB_bohHZH9OqRwyzNA It has a short braided strap and a long slim crossbody strap so you can wear it both ways. It’s small but you can fit a lot in it and I found it in this nice red color too! https://rstyle.me/+ZmPxq-FYQusO5XoBoIJmIg I hope that helps! Cheers, Deb
