Coral Midi Tank Dress
Your body may be a little curvier and softer now that you are 40, 50, or 60+, but that doesn’t mean you can’t embrace this classic summer dress style.
I love this beachy, midi tank dress from @frenchconnection. It’s soft, stretchy, and great at hiding a midlife middle.
At its base, this dress is classic tank style – an elongated tank top with a pretty scoop neck that fits close to the body. What is different and so flattering is the elegant wrap tie front that makes it look like you are wearing a sarong.
I’m fairly slim, but after 3 kids and menopause, who doesn’t have a bit of a jelly belly? With its beautiful front drape, this cute dress is a great way to camouflage the lumps and bumps and look fabulous at the beach. It’s pretty, feminine, and a great confidence booster.
Midis are the most popular length for dresses this spring, and with the lower cut neckline on this dress and no sleeves, the longer length is a nice way to balance things out.
I’m drawn to this stunning tropical coral shade, but the dress also comes in black, which is always chic and slimming.

When styling this dress, I kept the look simple and elegant, adding a cork purse and these sexy cork sandals. My chunky Tiger’s eye necklace, earrings, and cuff are from Dean Davidson’s new Nomad collection.
I love the way they add an exotic feel.
Light shapewear is also handy when styling a midi tank dress. This wrap-style midi-tank dress does a great job of hiding a thick waist, or men-o-pot, as I like to call it. But nothing can make you look ten pounds slimmer than wearing quality shapewear like Spanx.
Other Flattering Midi and Maxi Tank Dresses
My pretty wrap-style tank dress is one of many tank dresses that you’ll find easier to wear. There are also a lot of relaxed styles you can buy that have become popular. These are wider at the waist and have more of an A-line shape. This striped maxi tank dress is an example.
If you prefer these less form-fitting tank dresses, you could also try a:
Midi Tank Dress with a tiered skirt—This is great for gals who like the look of a tank top but want a looser, more flowy look around their bottom and hips.
Midi Tank dresses with Ruching: Soft fabric gathered at the tummy and hips gives them a more relaxed look and a more forgiving fit.
Midi Pleated Tank—This silky pleated silk tank by Eileen Fisher is interesting. It’s loose, laid-back, and geared to women who like tanks with a more generous fit.
Maxi or Midi A-line tanks– Not all tanks are sleek like a tube. Many have a more generous A-line shape and a slit at the side bottom to make it more comfortable to sit and stand in.
Black Tank Midi Dress with Side Stripe from Spanx
Midi Tank Dress with Built-in Slimming Properties —Some tanks, such as the new Spanx Air Essentials Side Stripe Tank ( see above), have built-in bras and torso/tummy slimming layers.
What to Wear Over a Tank Dress to Cover Your Arms

The other styling challenge some gals struggle with is what to wear over a tank dress to cover their arms. When it’s chilly, or you prefer to. Tank dresses are considered active and casual, so they look great worn with
- a sporty denim jacket and sneakers
- flowy boho ruana and low sandals
- a relaxed linen, gauze, or cotton shirt, left unbuttoned and tied at the waist, a summery shoe of your choice
- with a sweater tied around your shoulders or waist

Midi Tank dresses also have the power to remix into a dressier look. In this case, for example, you could pair one with
- a blazer and heels
- leather moto jacket
- a long cardigan and booties

The Final Word on Midi Tank Dresses
As you’ve seen, there are more options for tank dresses than you might think, as well as some pretty interesting ways to style them. If you’re reassessing your summer wardrobe, consider this classic summer style. Maxi dresses are casual and comfy and will give you ageless style.
I love the French Connection midi, but sadly, there is no petite sizing. The regular size would be too long, and the tank top would be too low. There are just so many dresses, tops, etc. that I really like, but they only cater to regulars. I wish I Could wear what I really want and not settle for what is only available in petite!
Hi Gail. Thanks for stopping by. It’s really eye-opening to hear how many women are petite and how hard it is to find what you want. I did this shopping post for petites but I’m going to post more going forward because we all want to look fabulous, at any size!https://www.fabulousafter40.com/how-to-dress-when-petite-where-to-shop/
