Casual Holiday Party

Let’s start with the easiest ones. A casual holiday party is usually a neighborhood gathering, a cookie exchange, a tree-decorating night, or a friend’s annual holiday open house where everyone shows up with a dish. These events are relaxed and friendly, but you still want to look put together.

Start with dark denim or black pants. These instantly give your outfit a little more presence while staying comfortable. Coated jeans are another great choice if you want something with a subtle shine that still feels easy to wear.

For tops, lean into fabrics that feel festive in a low-key way. A black blouse with some gold sparkle or a jewel-toned satin blouse always looks soft and seasonal and works perfectly with denim. A knit sweater in a holiday shade like deep red, evergreen, winter white, or soft gold adds warmth and color. You can also play with texture through ribbing, cable knit, pointelle details, or a sweater with pearl accents. If you want something slightly more special, a top with subtle shimmer or a statement neckline can be a great choice.

Shoes or booties should combine style and comfort- Ballet flats, sleek dressy loafers, or kitten heel booties all work. You’ll be able to move easily, chat with friends, grab food, and stand for hours without wishing you had worn something else. A simple pair of modern gold earrings or a delicate bracelet is all the accessorizing you need.

Holiday Brunch or Gift Exchange

Holiday brunches and gift exchanges usually call for something a touch festive without leaning dressy. These events have a relaxed, friendly energy, so choosing something with a hint of seasonal charm is all you need. A plaid dress is down-to-earth and festive, and with a pair of tall boots, it’s a fabulous look. Since you’ll likely be sitting and chatting for a while, comfort matters just as much as style, and a pretty coat or wrap can add a nice finishing touch as you move between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Work Holiday Party

Work holiday parties can feel surprisingly tricky to dress for, especially when you are over 40. You want to look festive, but you also have to keep things appropriate. That’s true whether your company hosts the event or you’re attending as your partner’s guest. In fact, partner parties sometimes feel even more intimidating since you’re walking into a room full of people you may not know well.

A midi dress in a solid jewel tone is always a smart option. Shades like emerald, plum, navy, and cranberry look rich and seasonal without being flashy. Look for flattering shapes such as soft A-line skirts, gentle wrap or ruched styles, or sleeveless dresses with a bit of coverage.

If you prefer separates, pair tailored trousers with a dressy blouse. Satin blouses add soft shine and look great in evening lighting. A blouse with interesting sleeves or texture adds personality to your outfit without going too far. A blazer layered over a dressy top also works really well, adding structure that suits a professional crowd.

If you are attending your partner’s work party, lean into the classics. You may be meeting people for the first time, so choosing something that feels confident and welcoming is always a good idea.

Cocktail Holiday Party

Cocktail parties are where the fun really begins. These gatherings often call for dressier pieces, but that doesn’t mean you need sequins from head to toe.

A satin or velvet dress is a fantastic choice for a cocktail event. Both fabrics drape softly and add a gentle holiday glow. Look for details like a flattering neckline, a skirt with movement, or a waistband that defines your shape. I rounded up some stunning velvet cocktail dresses for glam holiday parties that might inspire you in this post!

Family Christmas Dinners

Family Christmas gatherings call for outfits that feel warm, flattering, and comfortable for a full day of celebrating. Between photos, cooking, relaxing, and opening gifts, you want something stylish that moves with you.

A knit dress is perfect for this kind of celebration. It is soft, warm, and easy to wear from morning to night. If dresses are not your thing, try pairing stretch trousers or coated jeans with a pretty sweater.

Holiday Dinner Dates or Nights Out

Holiday dinner dates and evenings out with friends call for outfits that feel feminine and romantic. A red dress is a fantastic option at Christmas. This pretty Chantilly lace dress is beautiful for gals over 40, as it creates a long, flattering line and is incredibly easy to style. You can add a statement earring or a festive clutch to enhance the holiday feel.

If you prefer separates, try pairing a dressy blouse with a sleek skirt or tailored trousers. A top with a special sleeve, soft shimmer, or lace detail can add interest without going overboard. A sequin top paired with a simple bottom is another great option if you enjoy a little sparkle. Stick with a small evening bag and a comfortable heel or dressy flat.

Christmas Concert or Holiday Performance

Holiday concerts and festive performances always feel a little magical, whether you are watching a grandchild in a school program, heading to a church choir service, or enjoying a night out at The Nutcracker. These events can carange frombe casual to semi-formal. Dress pants and a festive top are a good choice because you can go more low-key or dress things up with metallics, sparkle, or jewelry, depending on the event’s formality.

Since you’ll likely be sitting and chatting for a while, comfort matters as much as style, and a pretty coat or wrap can add a nice finishing touch.

Dressy Holiday Gala or Formal Event

Formal holiday events give you the chance to be elegant in a way that feels special and memorable. Focus on luxurious fabrics, flattering silhouettes, and a bit of seasonal magic.

Long velvet gowns always make a statement at the most formal events. Velvet adds richness and presence, offering a graceful drape. Metallic pleated gowns are another lovely option because they move with ease and catch the light in a soft, flattering way.

Suppose the event calls for shorter dresses, a sparkly cocktail dress, or separates like a lace skirt and sequin top are lovely for the holiday. A top with a beautiful statement sleeve is an elegant choice. Choose heels that feel stable and comfortable enough for standing and socializing for hours.

  1. What I appreciate as a 48-year-old woman is that these are all things that I would actually wear at prices I can actually afford so thank you for taking the time to put this together. I can tell you put so much thought into it.

  2. I like the idea of wide-leg pants for a party. Something soft and flowy would be much more comfortable for my 60+ kegs rather than exposing them.

    1. Hi Kathy, I think soft, flowy pants are like a beautiful skirt but comfier, and they look gorgeous this time of year. Another option you may not have considered is soft flowy culottes or cropped pants, rather than to the ankle. That could be a chic look too! All the best!

  3. Greetings, Deborah and your glam gal followers,
Your holiday edition is better than ever— Great fresh ideas to try out.

Your readers and I would love to see you modeling some fabulous outfits yourself. Please consider doing so!

Best wishes to you, your staff, and all the other glam gals for a beautiful holiday season. no matter what religion we belong to, the words “Peace on Earth, Good Will To Men” rings true.

    Best regards,
    Christie

  4. I love the outfits but would like to see them all put together on an actual person and one that is at least in her mid to late 40s, not some young model. I get the ensemble pictures but would appreciate it on an actual 40 + female, not a 40+ model that looks thin and great. I want to see your festive attire on regular women like myself.

    1. Hi Lucy, I always encourage readers to submit photos. Unfortunately, the stores all use young gals like they think women over 40 have no interest in clothes. Ladies, keep those photos coming.- High-quality photos, head-to-toe, cute outfits, please. Thanks, Deborah
