Ava Grace’s Closet ~ She’s Got The Look

I’ve blogged for several years now and have made many blogging friends from around the world. But recently I came across a 40+ fashion blogger who lives right in my own backyard!

Susan Liberatore is a fellow Canadian and Toronto blogger who is the voice behind Ava Grace’s Closet’s lovely blog. Susan always looks fabulous and is a real inspiration, so I asked her to share some outfits and tell us more about her style, making her a Fabulous After 40 Styleblazer.

Business Chic

Susan recently returned to working full-time after taking a break from the corporate world for over 4 years to raise her youngest daughter, Ava Grace. On most office days, she wears cropped, tailored, skinny pants and a crisp blouse, statement accessories, and sleek and “relatively comfortable pumps.”

Other times she likes to wear a modern business suit like this one from Banana Republic. Susan says she has long preached that “all a woman needs always to look fabulous is good quality shoes, sunglasses and of course, a handbag.”  She combines all three in this outfit and looks totally fabulous.

Weekend Staples

On the weekends, Susan likes to shift gears a bit for a more casual and relaxed look.  Here she is in a faded denim pair with a graphic print tee, a blazer, and a roomy bucket bag- all chic choices for running errands, grabbing lunch, or just hanging around the house.

For a change, Susan likes to wear a leopard print flat or loafer. I love Susan’s choice of bold red. It’s a fantastic contrast to the blues and draws attention to all the right places.

Date Night

For a night out on the town, Susan injects some edginess with a pair of moto-style pants and a chiffon top with front panels. Peep-toe booties and a metallic clutch round out this sexy, urban outfit.

Although Susan loves to invest in timeless pieces for handbags, shoes, and accessories, she loves to play with disposable fashion when it comes to her everyday wardrobe. Those trendy pieces come in handy for a fun girls’ night out or date night.

Garden Party

Just because it’s early fall doesn’t mean you have to give up wearing bright colors or skirts. Susan has the right idea when she says, “Fall is in the air and I plan on enjoying bare-legged days for as long as I’m able.”

Whether you are attending a charity luncheon, a garden party, or afternoon tea, Susan’s art-inspired skirt is a pretty choice. Don’t you love the way the cobalt blue suede pumps make the outfit pop? And did you realize that sweater has a sexy open back? This look perfectly fits Susan’s personal style philosophy: “classic with a twist.”

Casual Friday

It’s easy to be confused by the work term casual Friday. You don’t want to look too dressed up or too dressed down. How do you get it just right?

Susan nails it here with a pair of tailored pants, a black blouse, a leather belt, a sporty trench, and animal print loafers. It’s relaxed but professional and a smart way to do casual Friday.

It’s always interesting to hear the inspiration behind a woman’s personal style. How does Susan come up with all these great looks?

Susan: I am an avid magazine reader {In Style is my long-time favorite!}, and I love to see what celebrities and models are wearing. Many popular bloggers also provide a ton of inspiration – as does Pinterest.

Deb: What is the biggest challenge that you as a 40+ female face when it comes to fashion?

Susan: I can truly say that I don’t approach fashion based on my age. With that said, I won’t be going out to purchase a supermini anytime soon, but I feel all trends can be reinterpreted to suit your body type and age. While my teenage daughter might wear her distressed jeans with a t-shirt and motorcycle boots, I might pair mine with a tailored shirt, blazer, and loafers. It’s all in how you put it together.

Deb: What is the best style advice you have ever received?

Susan: Wear what suits your body and makes you feel good, not necessarily what is “in” – everything doesn’t look good on everybody. As you get older, you will come to know who you are and what you love. Now, I don’t buy a thing unless I feel that way.

Deb: I totally agree. Thanks Susan. I look forward to following your blog.

  1. I would wear everything shown, except the “Date Night” look, it is just not me. Also, I would probably swap the black jacket and shirt in the last look for a shirt and jacket that echoed the brown/tan/gold tones in the shoes, as black near my face ages me. Susan looks fabulous in everything.

  2. Now THAT is over 40 style. I love all of the outfits, not too “out there” for the office, and the skirt with the blue pumps is divine. This woman is a good example of how to dress without looking like you tried too hard.

  3. I would wear Susan’s Casual Friday outfit in a minute! Every single item in that look works so well with the others. She looks very fashionable, (love that handbag and shoes) fun, confident and comfortable. What a great look!
