Spring & Summer

Best Summer T-Shirts for Women Over 50: My Favorite Picks

A great T-shirt is one of the handiest things you can have in your summer wardrobe. Every summer, I pick up a few new ones because they’re so easy to wear with jeans, white pants, linen trousers, shorts, or a casual skirt.

Not every T-shirt is a winner. I don’t like ones that are boxy or shapeless, and I don’t want them skin-tight either. My favorites skim the body, feel soft against my skin, and have those little details that make them look a bit more refined than an ordinary basic tee.

These are the T-shirts I’ve been enjoying this summer. They’re simple, easy to wear, and each has a little something that makes it feel special.

White Cutwork Tees

The White Tee I Wear on Repeat

There are thousands of white T-shirts out there, but finding one that’s flattering isn’t always easy. I look for a tee that’s opaque enough not to be see-through, has a little structure, and skims the body without clinging.

I also like a white tee with an interesting detail because plain white can sometimes feel a little flat. This eyelet version from Talbots has just enough texture at the neckline to feel feminine without being fussy.

I wear it with: White jeans, cropped pants, or shorts under a lightweight linen jacket for an easy, casually elegant look.

Split Neckline Tees

The Modern Neckline I Can’t Stop Wearing

I’ve always loved a V-neck, but lately I’ve been reaching for split-neck tees instead. They feel a little fresher and add interest without needing much jewelry.

The open neckline naturally draws the eye upward and creates a flattering long, lean line. Many split-neck styles are also cut slightly longer, making them easy to front tuck or leave untucked when you want a little more coverage.

Bright colors are my favorite because they instantly make an outfit feel fresh and summery, but I’ve seen a lot of cute striped split-neckline tees, too.

I wear mine with: Wide-leg or straight-leg jeans.

Animal Print Tees

The Animal Print Tee That Acts Like a Neutral

Animal print never really goes out of style, but I prefer softer versions over bold, high-contrast prints.

This taupe and cream print feels lighter and works beautifully with my coloring, making it perfect for summer.

I wear it with: White slim ankle jeans that have gold braid topstitch detail for a little extra sparkle.

Floral Tees

The Floral Tee That Doesn’t Look Frumpy

A floral tee can look fresh and modern—or a little dated. It all comes down to the print.

I found this pretty wine-and-pink version at Ann Taylor and loved the fresh mix of colors. It instantly livens up simple white pants or jeans, so you really don’t need much else.

I wear it with: White linen pants and a lightweight sweater tied over my shoulders for a relaxed, preppy look.

Striped Boatneckline Tees

The Striped Tee – Boat Neckline

You can never have too many striped tees. My favorite style is the boat neckline because it makes your shoulders look broader, which in turn makes your waist look smaller.

This one stood out because of the bright orange trim, which gives a classic stripe a fun, modern twist, but I have several other great ones too.

I like to wear this one with wide-leg cropped or linen pants for a coastal vibe.

I’ve also been wearing a green striped boat-neck tee with gold shoulder buttons that has a polished nautical feel.

I wear them with: Cropped wide-leg pants, jeans, white capris, and a woven summer bag.

Colorful Tees

The Colorful Tee That’s Coming on My Next Trip

When I’m packing for a trip, every piece has to earn its place in my suitcase.

This soft red tee does exactly that. The fabric feels wonderful against my skin, the fit is flattering without clinging, and it works with almost everything I pack.

I wear it with: Jeans, linen pants, shorts, or layered under a lightweight jacket.

Playful Tees

The Fun Tee That Makes Me Smile

Every wardrobe needs one tee that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Most of mine are classics, but this striped Bon Voyage tee always makes me smile. It’s playful, has a fun vacation feel, and reminds me that summer style doesn’t always have to be so serious. Sometimes it’s nice to wear something that’s simply cheerful.

Qince Tees – Best Value

Best Value Tees

Price doesn’t always tell you whether a T-shirt is good.

If it fits well, feels soft, washes beautifully, and keeps its shape, that’s what matters. I’ve found that some of the best tees for your money are from Quince. Quince is known for their quality basics that come in multiple, elegant neutral shades.  Here are some of their bestselling tees that you can’t go wrong with!

Pima Cotton Tee

Wondering Why Some Tees Feel So Much Nicer Than Others?

It often comes down to the fabric. Here’s a quick guide to the most common types you’ll see when shopping.

🥇 Pima Cotton (Best Overall)
A premium cotton fiber that’s softer against the skin, smoother, and more durable than regular cotton. It looks more expensive, layers beautifully, and is perfect if you want a polished casual look.

🥈 Slub Cotton
Made with unevenly spun yarn, creating subtle texture throughout the fabric. Lightweight, airy, and breathable, it’s ideal for hot summer days, beach vacations, and weekends when you want an effortless, relaxed look.

🥉 Basic Cotton
Available in everything from lightweight to heavyweight knits, with quality varying widely. A well-made cotton tee can be a wardrobe staple, but cheaper versions tend to lose their shape, pill, and wear out more quickly.

Cotton-Modal & Cotton-TENCEL™ Blends
These blends are exceptionally soft and drape beautifully, often feeling even more luxurious than basic cotton. They’re especially flattering because they skim the body rather than looking stiff. Just make sure the fabric isn’t so thin that it clings or becomes see-through.

How to Style a Great T-Shirt

A T-shirt may be one of the simplest pieces in your closet, but it’s also one of the most versatile. The right styling can take it from casual to polished in minutes.

  • Tuck it in. A front tuck instantly defines your waist and makes jeans, shorts, and skirts look more modern.
  • Add a third piece. A blazer, lightweight cardigan, denim jacket, or linen shirt adds structure and elevates a simple tee.
  • Wear modern jewelry. A chunky chain, statement earrings, or stacked bracelets make a basic tee feel intentional.
  • Choose flattering bottoms. Wide-leg jeans, straight-leg denim, linen pants, midi skirts, and tailored shorts all pair beautifully with a classic tee.
  • Finish with great shoes. Sneakers, loafers, espadrilles, or metallic sandals can completely change the mood of your outfit.

Final Thoughts

I’d rather have a handful of T-shirts I really love than a drawer full of ones I rarely wear. When the fit is flattering, the fabric feels good, and the quality is there, a simple T-shirt becomes one of the most useful pieces in your closet.

I hope this roundup gives you a few new ideas—and helps you find a T-shirt you’ll enjoy wearing all summer long.
