As spring and summer roll in, you can be sure of three things: sunshine, flowers and lots of weddings. If you’ve received a wedding invitation and need something new for the nuptials, here are some pretty plus size dresses to wear to a wedding.
1. Capelet Dress
If it’s been a while since you bought a dress for a wedding or any other special occasion, you may not have a clue where to start. What’s in style and what works best for plus size figures? One of the most popular styles in the last while has been the capelet dress. It consists of a classic sheath with a bit of flowy chiffon across the bust to the waist. The chiffon can be on an angle, like the dress above, or cut straight across at the waist, but either way, it creates a very light, airy, elegant look.
This pretty apricot cocktail has some interesting shutter pleats that give it extra style, but if that’s too much detail for you, there are other capelet dresses without them that are also just as lovely.
As for accessories, here’s a tip: the best color for a light pastel dress like this is a nude shoe. A dark shoe would create too much contrast and weigh the dress down. Instead of seeing the dress, you’d see the dark shoes first, and they would serve as a stopping point for the eye, making your legs look stubby. If you want to look taller and slimmer, a nude shoe is the way to go because it elongates your legs.
2. Floral Sheath
In spring and summer, you can never go wrong wearing a floral dress to a wedding. Florals are happy, and romantic and totally appropriate for a wedding. Many of us have been told never to wear white to a wedding, but when you have a dress with white background and florals as bright, bold and cheery as these, the dress reads colorful, not white, so would be fine.
Try to pick up on of the colors in the dress when you are picking out your handbag. That adds a modern touch. Of course, a clutch always looks most chic for a wedding.
Block heel sandals look elegant and are very comfy. They’re also super practical for weddings that may be outdoor or having the cocktail reception on a patio or grass area. No high heels getting stuck in patios tones, grass or a wooden deck!
3. Lace Dress
Have you ever owned a lace dress? Here’s your chance. You can find many cute plus sizes dresses for a wedding in lace. Lace is a very popular choice because it is feminine and romantic. For a modern look pick a lace dress that is simple, streamlined and unfussy. Lace and lot of layers and froufrou are going to look old-fashioned and heavy. A simple lace sheath dress style, shift dress style or fit and flare style is most elegant and slimming.
A note on jewelry – Weddings are sophisticated affairs, even more, casual ones. Bring out your finest jewelry like gold, silver, diamonds and special gemstones. Leave chunky costume jewelry for everyday outfits.
Thank you so much for the plus size options!!! And all the accessories are gorgeous!
I have a mulberry colored A-line wrap dress that I will be wearing to an evening wedding at an upscale hotel. It has a rhinestone buckle accent at the waistline. What kind of pumps would go best with it?
Hi Ginny, I love mulberry. It’s such a rich, beautiful color and since you have a pretty rhinestone buckle, how about a silver shoe? Silver is considered a neutral and it would also look pretty echoing the buckle. Other choices could be gold, navy or black, (although black might look too heavy with mulberry depending on the shoe.) Try a few one and remember the shoe should co-ordinate with the dress, not overpower it. Have a wonderful time!
These are beautiful choices for a wedding. The choices are cheerful, tasteful and flattering to most full figures. I recently attended a wedding and wore a similar dress with very short sleeves. As I don’t like my arms, I simply carried a very light and slightly lacy shawl to cover this area. I felt so elegant and flirty -especially while dancing!
