Velvet Jacket vs. Velveteen Jacket – What’s the difference?
Velvet, Velveteen ….I know it can be a bit confusing. So let me start by defining the difference between the two and telling you that all of today’s style recipes work for both.
Velvet is more plush than velveteen. It’s woven from silk, rayon, polyester, or a blend of the three. It has a longer, dense pile than velveteen, is very fluid, and has a beautiful sheen.
Velveteen resembles velvet (and most people refer to it as velvet), but technically, it is not. It’s made from cotton and cotton blend fibers, has a shorter pile, is stiffer, has less sheen, and is more structured than velvet.
The advantage of Velveteen is that it’s less “precious” and more practical for everyday use, and it’s better when you want a more structured look.

1. Satin Top and Jeans
A plush velvet or velveteen jacket has a regal feel, so I’ve played that up by pairing my Velveteen blazer with this silky, blue satin blouse.

You can dress down the velveteen jacket and satin blouse a touch by wearing jeans—see my first photo—or comfy, casual, ponte stretch knit pants, as in this photo above.
Sophisticated slingbacks are trending and look fabulous with both these outfits. Try silver or black with a festive bow to complete your look. If you are heading out to a party, a sparkly clutch is a stylish touch.

2. Cashmere Sweater and Black Pants
A lightweight, fine cashmere sweater pairs perfectly with a velvet blazer. Add jeans or casual black pants, and you have a relaxed, luxurious holiday look.
This bold floral cashmere sweater is a beauty. The idea of a jewel-tone floral print at Christmas feels very fresh and pretty. The deep purple, combined with bright pink, green, and a little black, is a rich-looking color combo with this navy blue velveteen jacket.

Here’s the cashmere sweater on its own. It’s more lively than a solid-colored sweater and so feminine!

3. Eyelash Knit Sweater and Jeans
We’ve been talking about layering a velvet jacket or velveteen jacket with a cashmere sweater. What about an eyelash knit sweater?
These fuzzy, wuzzy sweaters are very popular this time of year and look glamorous paired with velvet. For a playful look, wear jeans with an eyelash sweater and a velvet jacket.
You don’t even need to wear the jacket. Just drape it around your shoulders to frame your sweater, and you’ll look chic!

Of course, this alluring sweater is pretty cute on its own, too.
And how do you like those shoes? They’re comfy flats with tiny rhinestones that crisscross in front—so delicate looking.
So there you go- three casual holiday looks with a velvet jacket. You can feel comfy and look classy both at the same time this Christmas.

I love the color and I’m tempted to get it. Any thoughts about whether and how it could be worn after the holidays?
Hi The velveteen blazer is a beauty, and I see it being worn between October and mid-February at the most.I think if you were to wear it after December 31st, you could, but you would really have to dress it down or else it would look too festive. I would wear it with an all-black dress – maybe a fine sweater dress, for example, with a turtleneck, or I would wear it with black leather pants and a white top, but nothing too fancy.
I might also wear it with black or blue jeans and a very simple silky sleeveless v-neck top. I would also play down my jewelry so it doesn’t look party-like.
I hope that helps.
Velvet after Christmas is like white after Labor Day. It’s fine to do, but many people still feel weird about it.
On a positive note, I would not think twice about getting this jacket. It is a classic, and even if you don’t start wearing it until next fall, it’s a deal, and it will look fabulous then!
Cheers, Deborah
Great post! I’ve been wondering about how I could use a velvet blazer this holiday season. You answered that question with some very helpful suggestions!
I’m confused about the fabric content velvet vs. velveteen–and what it means for luster and fabric “feel”. I’ve noticed that blazers with high percentages of polyester looked shiny (and not in a good way) and have been made with shorter and shorter pile each year. The ones with the shortest pile have had higher percentages of synthetics (especially polyester) and looked cheap. (I found those at Nordstrom in the $100 to $250 price range as well as at Ann Taylor and WHBM–and of course in lower end retailers.) Until this year, I found that J Crew, Talbots and Banana Republic had the most “luxurious” feeling velvet/velveteen blazers. They had a lot of cotton. Now the fabric even in their blazers has much thinner pile.
