For years, buying a leather jacket was pretty straightforward. You bought a black moto, wore it with everything, and called it a day. But take a look at leather jackets this fall, and something has definitely shifted.

The newest styles feel softer, more sophisticated, and in many cases, much more feminine. There are some fresh shapes that are exciting, along with a few updated classics that suddenly look new again.

So, if you already own a leather jacket, don’t worry. I’m not suggesting you toss it! But if you’re wondering what’s changed—or you’re thinking about buying a new one—here are the leather jacket trends worth knowing about for Fall 2026.

1. Leather Bomber Jackets

Bombers have been coming back for a few seasons, but this fall they’ve really hit their stride. What I like about the newest leather versions is they are so much more elegant than the nylon bombers we used to wear.

The leather gives them a richer look, and many have softer shoulders, fuller sleeves, and a gently gathered hem that creates that relaxed, blouson shape. Suede bombers are also popular and feel even softer.

The trick with a bomber is getting the proportions right. Some are very oversized, which can be a lot of jacket to carry. I prefer more streamlined versions with a bit of fullness, without swallowing you up like this Reiss one above.

Since most bombers finish around the waist or high hip, they look especially good with today’s higher-rise straight-leg, wide-leg, and bootcut jeans. They’re also an easy way to make a simple sweater-and-jeans outfit feel more current.

2. Funnel Necks and Stand Collar Leather Jackets

If you want a leather jacket that looks noticeably different from what we’ve been wearing, take a look at the new funnel-neck styles.

Instead of wide lapels, the collar stands up around the neck, creating a clean, sleek line. Some are quite dramatic and come right up under the chin, while others have a lower stand collar that’s much easier to wear.

What makes these feel so new is their simplicity. Fewer zippers, snaps, and other details compete for attention, so the jacket’s shape becomes the focus.

You’ll find funnel-neck jackets that are short and boxy, as well as longer, more streamlined versions. If a very high collar feels overwhelming, you can get the same modern effect with a lower stand collar.

This is one of those small changes that makes a surprisingly big difference. Put a funnel-neck leather jacket beside a traditional moto, and you immediately see which one belongs to 2026.

3. Waist-Defining and Peplum Jackets

Here’s a change I’m happy to see. After years of oversized, straight-up-and-down jackets, designers are bringing the waist back into the picture.

Some jackets are gently cinched or fitted through the middle. Others use curved seams, belts, or wrap fronts to create shape. I’m also seeing front-tie styles, which are part of this same softer, more feminine direction.

And yes, peplum leather jackets are back, too.

Before you picture the very flouncy peplums from years ago, the new ones are generally cleaner and more sculpted. The flare starts at the waist but doesn’t necessarily have that big ruffled look we remember.

If you have an hourglass shape or just like a jacket that gives you some definition, this is a nice alternative to all the boxy leather styles out there. Just keep the shaping subtle. A little curve at the waist can be much more flattering—and easier to wear—than an exaggerated peplum.

4. The Updated Moto Jacket

If you have a beautiful moto jacket hanging in your closet, keep it. The moto has become a classic and isn’t suddenly out of style.

What does look a little dated are some of the very busy versions with lots of chunky silver zippers, snaps, buckles, and heavy hardware. The newer motos are cleaner. The leather is often softer, the hardware is quieter, and the overall shape is less aggressive. You still get that cool moto feel, just without quite so much going on.

I’m also seeing motos in rich brown, burgundy, and a very dark blue, which completely changes their personality. They feel warmer and a little more sophisticated than traditional black.

So I wouldn’t rush out to replace a moto you already love. But if you’re buying one now, I’d lean toward a simpler style. It will work with more of your wardrobe and is less likely to feel tied to a particular year.

5. Collarless Leather Jackets

Collarless leather jackets aren’t new, but they’re getting more attention this fall as part of the shift toward cleaner, more feminine leather styles.

These are neat little jackets with a round neckline, a clean front, and a waist or high-hip length. Some have beautiful buttons or patch pockets for a Chanel-inspired feel, while others are simple and streamlined.

If you like leather but find moto jackets a little too edgy, this is a lovely alternative. The clean neckline and shorter length give you a softer, more feminine look, and they’re especially easy to wear with the higher-waisted jeans and pants that are popular now.

I like them best when they’re not styled too primly. Wear one with jeans and a simple knit or tee and let the leather give that ladylike shape a modern edge.

6. Distressed and Vintage Leather Jackets

Not every leather jacket this fall is smooth, shiny, and pristine. Some of the most interesting ones look as though they’ve already had a life.

Washed and distressed finishes give brown, cognac, and even black leather a softer, slightly vintage look. You may see subtle fading around the seams or color variations rather than one perfectly uniform shade.

Some heavily distressed versions exist, but you don’t have to go that far. If your style is more classic, just a little variation in the leather can add richness without making you look like you borrowed your jacket from a motorcycle gang!

Suede fits beautifully into this more relaxed leather story, too. It has that soft, matte finish that works so well with fall knits, denim, and trousers.

7. Sculpted Leather Jacket

Some leather jackets don’t fit neatly into any of the categories above, and that’s because the shape itself is the trend.

I’m seeing sculpted sleeves, rounded shoulders, oversized collars, curved hem,s and unexpected closures. These are the jackets that make you stop and look twice because there’s something just a little different about them.

Runway versions can get pretty extreme, but that’s not what I’m suggesting you wear. One interesting detail is plenty.

A softly rounded sleeve or beautiful collar can make a simple leather jacket look special without making it difficult to wear. And if you’re someone who already owns the basics, this is where you can have a little fun.

What Leather Jacket Colors Are Trending for Fall 2026?

Black will always be a leather-jacket classic, but this fall I’m seeing much more chocolate brown, along with deep burgundy and oxblood. And I have to say, I love the change.

These richer shades have all the sophistication of black but can feel softer and warmer, especially worn near the face. Chocolate is also incredibly easy to mix with cream, camel, denim, navy, and many of the other colors we’re wearing this fall.

Cognac and other warm browns are still around, too. You’ll find the occasional leather jacket in a brighter fashion color, but I wouldn’t call colorful leather a major trend this season. The real color story is these deep, luxurious fall shades.

Of course, that doesn’t mean your black leather jacket suddenly looks dated. Not at all. But if you’re buying something new and want it to feel distinctly Fall 2026, chocolate or burgundy is worth a look.

Which Leather Looks Most Current for Fall 2026

The leather itself is part of what’s making jackets look different this fall.

Soft, supple leather works especially well with this season’s relaxed and shaped silhouettes. It drapes rather than sitting stiffly on the body, which can make even a bomber look more sophisticated.

Suede is another big part of the fall leather story. It’s softer and less edgy than traditional leather and looks especially beautiful in all the warm browns we’re seeing.

Much of what’s selling is faux leather. Some excellent versions are available now, but you need to be picky. Look for faux leather that feels soft and has a more matte finish. If it’s very stiff or overly shiny, it can cheapen an otherwise beautiful jacket.

Whether you choose genuine leather, suede , or faux, I’d pay more attention to the quality, feel, and fit than the label.

So, Which Leather Jacket Should You Buy?

Before buying anything, take a look at what you already own. If you have a classic moto that you still love, you don’t need another one just because leather is trending. A funnel-neck jacket or bomber would give you a completely different look.

If you’ve always found leather jackets a little too tough or masculine, this may actually be the season to try one. A shaped jacket, collarless lady jacket, or soft suede bomber has a very different feel from the traditional black biker jacket.

And if you want something you’ll wear for years, don’t get too hung up on finding the trendiest style. A simple silhouette, beautiful leather, and a flattering fit will always win.
