Long Flowing Skirts For Summer – A Pretty Way to Cover Your Legs
Pants are the obvious way to cover up in summer if you feel self-conscious about your legs, but they can get a little dull. So something you may want to try wearing instead is a pretty maxi skirt.
If you think long summer skirts for women mean peasant style with tiers of fabric and lace (and you’re just not into those), you really need to have a second look. There are so many types and ways of styling maxi skirts. Here’s what I mean.
Haute Hippie
The maxi skirts for women that you may remember wearing back in the 70s had a definite boho vibe. But today’s styles are toned down. This delicate blue ethnic print maxi has a free spirit feel that is subtle and modern. By combining this casual long skirt with a fresh white tank, a crisp structured handbag, a sophisticated statement necklace, and designer sandals you get an upscale, casual look.
Tropical Paradise
Here’s a playful summer maxi for when you are going somewhere tropical or meeting at an outdoor patio with friends for drinks. Hot pink florals printed on a dark, inky background give this skirt a stand-out style. A white or pink tank keeps the look long and lean, and a cute white jean jacket is ideal for air-conditioned places when your arms get chilly.
Transitional Maxi
Not everyone is into light summer colors, and that’s o.k. This comfy outfit is low-key shades of gray and burgundy is a nice change from beachy summer brights. The wide ruched waistband on the skirt helps hide a tummy, and the slit on the side adds femininity. When you have plain on top and plain on the bottom, it’s nice to add a print bag to spice things up.
Do you own a long skirt? How do you wear it?
Thanks for your post. It indeed makes us more fab and youthful looking even in our 40+. More power to you, Ms. Deborah.
Thank you for the inspiration. I have a new white maxi skirt and a new black one. I honestly haven’t worn them yet, but you’ve given me some great ideas for ways to style them.
Thank you.

Deborah, I am pretty new to Fabulous After 40 (try 60), and I am having fun paying more attention to fashion, thanks to you. I think your advice is Fabulous, and I share your general outlook. I am so excited–I just bought a maxi skirt!! I don’t think I would have done it had I not been reading your blog and getting a little more fashion-savvy. The real test was that my 25yo daughter said it looks great and makes me look skinny! (I’m 5’2″ and not skinny). Don’t you hate it when they take one look at you in a new outfit and say, “Just no.”? LOL.
When I saw the printed skirt, I thought, “What would Deborah wear with this?” To lengthen the look, I wear a solid, short-sleeved, drapey top that goes a little long over the hips, gathering a bit at the waist–a significant camo effect. I’ll wear a pendant style rather than a chunky statement necklace to keep it long. Thanks for helping me get out of the ’80s!
