Summer Make-Up To Be a Beauty at the Beach
Whether you plan on being by the seaside this summer or not, it’s still nice to have that beachy, sunkissed glow. Celebrity make-up artist Sana Young has these tips for a warm weather look that is radiant, healthy, and youthful.
1. Roche Posay sunscreen | 2. Makeup Forever Bronzer | 3. Anastasia Brow Wiz | 4. Diorshow Mascara | 5. MAC Lipstick
1. Start with a Sunscreen
The best make-up you can have is your skin. In summer, especially you need to protect it with good sunscreen. My favorites are Oil of Olay, Obagi, and La Roche-Posay (Deborah’s favorite)
2. Get a Glow With Self Tanner
The purpose of a self-tanner is to give you an overall darker complexion. It will make the whites of your eyes and your teeth look whiter which makes you look glowing, healthy, and youthful. My favorite is St. Tropez tanning mousse because it is not too orange, pink, or brown. It looks authentic, and it spreads well. Just a little goes a long way leaving your skin feeling light and clean.
There are others that may work better for you. To test one out, put a little on your arm or leg to see what color it turns on your skin. It can often take up to an hour for the color to change to the final shade. For fair gals who just want a hint of color, Jergens Natural Glow creates flawless, natural-looking color. (Deborah tells me this is a favorite of hers too.)
3. Add Bronzer
Many women are confused about why you would need a bronzer if you are wearing a self-tanner. A bronzer is used to add definition to your face. You use a bronzer to color the cheeks and contour your features. You can use a pink blush with self-tanner to give yourself some color, but if you want to look like you have been at the beach all day, bronzer is best.
The Best Bronzers?
For oily skin (or if you have a soft fill done to your cheeks) you tend to be a bit shinier, so I recommend a MATTE finished bronzer. Try Hoola or Make Up For Ever Bronzer.
For Normal to Dry Skin – I suggest a frosted finish to avoid looking chalky. Rimmel makes a great bronzer that is lightly frosted. I’m also a huge fan of Benefit Bronzer (Dallas shade).
How to Apply Bronzer? Use a brush and apply just below the cheekbone. Circle up to offer color and gradually make it to the apples of the cheeks..just like you have been in the sun.
4. Pump up the Brows
With all that tanning and glowing brows are sure to disappear. I suggest filling in the brows with a brow pencil like Anastasia’s Brow Wiz. A good brow frames our eyes.
5. Accentuate the Eyes
If you plan on wearing eyeshadow use a light base coat first so your lids don’t look dry. Then apply a bit of a bronzer on the brow bone and just below it. If it has a bit of a frost that works well too. But use it sparingly. Unless you think you will be swimming or it’s ultra-hot, waterproof mascara is not necessary. My tired and true favorite is L’Oreal Voluminous in black. I find the other shade called Blackest Black doesn’t wear as well).
Also, Diorshow gives a wonderful finish in both waterproof and regular waterproof mascara.
6. Sun Kissed Lips
I like applying self-tanner on the lips to give a couple of shades of color without looking like lipstick. If you want a livelier look, try coral or bright pink. For a beachy look, try a lighter coral or pink with a touch of frost. Not too much though. You don’t want to look like Suzanne Somers in Three’s Company.
For scorchers- If you are going somewhere and you know it is going to be a scorcher and you are worried about your makeup running then you can use a primer under your foundation and wear waterproof mascara. Try MAC for the best long-lasting foundations.
7. Get Beachy Hair
Nothing says summer like beachy waves. If your hair has a bit of length, let the wave come through by using a diffuser with your hair dryer or scrunch your hair after applying some product. Bumble and Bumble make great hair products to give your hair the texture of sand and salt water. A few golden highlights frame your face and make it look like you’ve been enjoying the sun even if you are sitting at your desk!
Guess a girl can always dream………

Hi Deborah, you said it very well. Sunscreen is essential in summer to protect our skin from the sun. I will use these sunscreens that you have shared with us. Thanks much!
Hi Deborah, I tried the Jergens Natural Glow for the first time, and I like it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Debbie, You are welcome. This is one product I swear by.
