What to Wear to Thanksgiving Dinner

Hi Deborah,

Thanksgiving is coming up fast. What should I wear to Thanksgiving dinner?  We are having a very small, low-key dinner with my sister and her family, but I still want to look fashionable and pulled together. Can you give me some ideas for Thanksgiving dinner outfits that are casual, stylish, and comfy? Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue,

Even though your Thanksgiving dinner will be small and understated this year, it’s nice to hear you want to celebrate in style. Life is too short to be frumpy! This Thanksgiving, seize the holiday spirit by saying no to sloppy sweatpants and boring slump-around-clothes. Try these suggestions for Thanksgiving dinner outfits that are casual and classy.

1. A Sparkly Top

A low-key celebration doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Sweaters are always comfy, so why not wear one with some personality?

A sparkly top is always so festive this time of the year. This glamorous, brown glittery top with the front tie is stretchy and comfy. It’s perfect for a casual dinner when worn with a pair of jeans or black pants.

Add some sleek suede booties and some fun, dangly earrings, and let’s get the party started. This also comes in a beautiful wine color and can double as a holiday top at Christmas time!

4 Relaxed, No Fuss Thanksgiving Travel Outfits

Are you flying home for Thanksgiving and dreading the noisy airport crowds, mile-long security checks, and the jam-packed flights?

travel clothes thanksgiving

One way to ease the stress of holiday travel is to dress as simply and as comfortably as you can.

When I travel in fall, I like to wear stretchy jeans, a light jacket that easily rolls into a ball and is packable, a warm sweater with long sleeves (as I get cold on planes), low booties, and a big tote. But there are many more ways you can dress.

Here are 4 no-fuss Thanksgiving travel outfits to get you home looking stylish and feeling relaxed.

Thanksgiving Travel - Pink Cardigan

When You Travel, Dress in Layers

Airplanes get chilly, don’t they? But they can heat up fast too! And if you throw the occasional hot-flash into the mix, there’s rarely a perfect temperature. The best way to battle fluctuating temperatures is by layering your clothes.

Start with a soft top like this super-soft and stretchy, gathered hem knit top, followed by a long, sweater. This grandpa cardigan is snuggly and chic. You may need a coat too if it’s going to be cold when you arrive. Just make sure it’s not too heavy and bulky. That overhead cabin space is so limited.

Be Kind to Your Feet

There’s no way around it. At the airport, you are going to be doing a ton of walking, so make sure you’re sensible, not silly about your choice of shoes. These soft, comfy sneakers will take you from terminal to terminal with a smile on your face. Slip-ons are even better, which means no fumbling with laces or zippers when it’s time to do your security scan.

Other great travel pieces in this outfit include a light quality duffle bag. It’s always handy to carry your book, water bottle,  headphones, and all the other little things you need to stay comfy while you’re traveling. Note: I always like to carry a pair of ankle socks in my bag, just in case I want to slip off my shoes on the plane and let my feet breathe.

Bring a Poncho or Wrap

Depending on your end destination, a snuggly poncho or wrap is ideal for flying. I love this plaid one! The pink and gray look so pretty together.

One bonus of bringing a wrap is that it can double as a blanket, depending on cabin temperature.

Cute suede booties add some style – low to medium heels only for comfort on the long walk from your gate to the baggage carousel. A  tote bag style purse is always handy and chic.

Thanksgiving Travel Outfit - Joggers

Wear Clothes That Move and  Stretch

Feeling comfy is key if you are going to be traveling, especially given that airplane seats are so small and cramped. It’s a great idea to wear clothes with loose waistbands ( like a drawstring pair) or that have some built-in stretch so that you can move around easily. There’s nothing worse than sitting for hours in a tight, stiff pair of pants or a top that you are worried about crinkling.

Leggings are a Passenger’s Best Friend

Leggings are super comfy for air travel. Just make sure to cover your bottom to look airport chic. Try a good quality legging or Ponte pants ( a slightly thicker, double knit version)  Also handy is a cozy scarf that you can easily take on or off depending on the temperature in the plane. ( It can double as a pillow!) You can even roll it up into a ball and tuck into your suitcase upon arrival if you need to.

I’ve pulled in a great pair of riding boots here, which look really cool with leggings. I’ve worn tall suede boots on short flights. However, if your trip is more than a couple of hours long, tall boots may feel too hot.

Other items to consider taking

  • A practical but stylish crossbody bag to carry all those little extras and free up your hands so you can pull out tickets and roll your suitcase.
  • A Light Rain Jacket for Layering  that you can roll up and put in your bag if you are not going to a wintry destination
  • A large travel wallet with a zipper all the way around to carry your passport in so you don’t lose it. Mine is bright red, so I don’t lose it!

Enjoy your trip in comfort and style. By wearing one of these fab looks, who knows, you might be that lucky passenger who gets bumped up to first-class!

@tracy_hensel

The biggest obstacle to wearing your hair long past 40 is that as we age our faces lose fat and our hair thins. Long straight hair can drag your face down and make you look old. If you want to keep your hair long and avoid that drawn-out look, then the best thing to do is get a layered cut. Tracy, a  lifestyle blogger and mom to 5 daughters, has a modern layered cut that’s perfect for a midlife mama.  Her beautiful layers add volume and body and widen her face, giving her a fresh, youthful appearance.

Casual Dressing: Readers Share Their Favorite Looks

Casual Dressing means relaxed but it doesn’t have to mean frumpy. Take a look at these cute casual outfits that are favorites with my Fabulous After 40 readers.

Casual for a Concert

It can be tricky to know what to wear to a concert. Most concerts are casual occasions, but you still want to look nice. One way to tackle what to wear is to combine elements of casual and dressy clothes.

Fifty-five year old Maria  from San Diego, California strikes a cord in this cute outfit that pairs dark wash jeans with a frilly blouse.

The frills give the blouse a dressy feel, while the short sleeves and jeans keep it more casual. Don’t you love those pointy toed pumps? They’re a fun surprise that makes her outfit pop.

Classic Blue Jeans and a Pretty Top

For 48-year-old Patrizia from Italy blue jeans are her definition of casual dressing. Here she dresses them up with a top that has an abstract print – a hot trend right now.  Partrizia writes, “I have a straight-banana body shape with not much waist definition. I feel very comfortable in this outfit, casual but still feminine, it gives the illusion of a more curvy figure, or at least that I do have hips!”

If you are struggling to dress your rectangular-shaped body just as Patrizia does, you can find tips on creating curves in my post, “5 Tips for Dressing if Your Body Has a Rectangle Shape”.

Not everyone is big on jeans. Ela, the owner of the fashion boutique Delacor Studio, prefers something more creative. She has paired an asymmetrical top with flowy pants and huge sculptured earrings to create a casual, fashion-forward look.

Swatika, from Indonesia, is a modest dresser who prefers coverage from head to toe. Here she is in a veil, or hijab as it is known in Indonesia, and a dress. Instead of pants she has opted for opaque tights and cute booties. Her black leather motorcycle jacket puts a hip edge on this traditional look.
