3 Figure Flattering Tie-Front Tops
Are you ready to tie one on this spring? I’m seeing lots of tops that tie up and knot at the front, and they look pretty cute! I just bought this pink front tie top and I love wearing it with white jeans.
Knotting or tying up tops and shirts is a styling trick that’s been used by women for ages to help define the waist, turn a long top into a cropped one, and add some femininity to an outfit. Remember that famous photo of Marilyn Monroe in a white shirt with the front hem tied fetchingly at her waist? The modern version of the tie-front top has a tie built right in.
Tie-front tops work like magic to create the illusion of a smaller waist and a more hourglass figure. Who doesn’t want that? Here are 3 figure-flattering ways to wear tie-front tops.
With White Jeans
There is nothing easier than wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but instead of settling for a ho-hum frumpy version of this classic outfit formula, add some polish with a tie-front top and updated accessories. Adding a tie-front to a t-shirt instantly takes it from simple to sophisticated.
Tie-front tops look great on anyone, but this one would be especially good for a pear-shaped gal. The cap sleeves help balance out broad hips and the pretty tie call attention to a narrow waist. You can easily wear this with blue or black jeans or do what I’ve done here and give it an elegant twist by keeping the colors light and neutral.

With Classic Denim
A blue striped shirt with jeans is a classic spring look but just because something is classic doesn’t mean it shouldn’t change from time to time. Update your version of these basics with a gorgeous tie-front top like this one and a pair of jeans in one of the newer silhouettes we’re seeing for spring like this bootcut pair. Yes, bootcut!
After years of skinnies, bootcut and straight-leg jeans are making their way back to the scene in a big way. I love them for gals over 40 because they are universally flattering. Wear them with a bit of a heel. These comfy wedge sandals in a sunny spring yellow do the trick nicely.
With Dressy Pants
Wearing classics in a modern way is the style recipe for looking current and youthful. There is probably nothing more classic than a white shirt and black pair of pants, but look at how that very basic outfit formula comes alive with the twist of a tie-front shirt, black jogger pants and a classic pump in an unexpected pattern.
Take a closer look at the very cool bustier detailing on this gorgeous tee. It’s so unique. I also love how the statement-making sash creates the illusion of a narrow waist, whether you have one or not. LOL! For a few other ideas on how to balance classics with trends, check out my article here.
Have you bought a tie-front shirt yet? Thinking of giving one a try this spring or summer? I’m curious – let me know what you think.
The casual with denim look is me to a T. What do you think of the skinny flares, which are slimmer in the leg than a bootcut, and with less of a flare?
Dear Anonymous, I like skinny flares. It really depends on what works for your body. If they look good on, go for it!
