The Ultimate Beach Resort Packing Guide for Women Over 50

It’s that time of year when many of us are dreaming of sun-kissed skin, sandy toes, and the soothing sound of waves. But I know the “what to wear” part can sometimes feel overwhelming.

I’ve put all my favorite tips into this beach resort packing guide for women to help you pack a suitcase that makes you feel like the most stylish person at the resort without any of the stress.

Tommy Bahama Tropical Beach Dress

Tommy Bahama is one of my favorite brands to shop at for resort and beach wear! They are known for their bright colors and tropical designs. This is the 2026 version of this tropical print dress with the flirty hem. I love it, as I have the same Tommy Bahama ruffle hem dress in all pink.

First Things First: What Exactly is Resort Wear?

I get this question all the time! “Resort wear” is essentially a year-round “vacation” category of clothing. It’s designed for travel to tropical climates and encompasses everything from your swimwear to your evening dinner outfits.

Here are a few things to remember:

  • Comfort is King: This isn’t the time for anything restrictive or annoying. You’re on vacation! You want to be able to move, relax, and savor every moment without tugging, pulling, or feeling constricted. You’ll want breathable fabrics, easy silhouettes, and shoes you can actually walk in.

For all of my tips on keeping your cool when the humidity is high, don’t miss my guide on how to dress in hot weather without feeling sticky.

  • Versatility is Your Best Friend: Space in a suitcase is precious, right? So, every item you pack should ideally be able to do double or even triple duty. A sarong that’s a beach coverup, a skirt, and a headscarf? Yes, please! A dress that goes from poolside lunch to evening cocktails? Absolutely!
  • Embrace the Flow: Resort wear, by its very nature, tends to be relaxed and flowing. This is fantastic news for us! Maxi dresses, wide-leg pants, tunics, and kaftans are not only incredibly stylish but also incredibly forgiving and comfortable.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Packing Method

If you want to travel light and skip the baggage claim drama, you might want to look into the 5-4-3-2-1 Resort Packing Formula. While I haven’t personally tried this exact method yet, I know so many women who swear by it as a total lifesaver for staying organized.

The secret is choosing a tight color palette, such as whites, sands, and one pop of oceanic blue, so everything mixes and matches effortlessly. Here is how the breakdown looks for a perfect week in paradise:

  • 5 Tops: 2 linen button-downs, 2 camisoles or tank tops, and 1 classic tee.
  • 4 Bottoms: 2 Pairs of wide leg linen pants, 1 skirt, and 1 pair of tailored shorts.
  • 3 Dresses: 1 Breezy caftan, 1 knit maxi, and 1 “wow” dress for a special dinner.
  • 2 Swimsuits: 1 Sleek one-piece and 1 supportive tankini, so one is always dry!
  • 1 Light Layer: A pashmina or denim jacket for those chilly, air-conditioned restaurants.

By following this list, you’re essentially creating a sophisticated capsule wardrobe where every top works with every bottom.

Your Resort Wear Wardrobe Checklist

Swimwear That Makes You Feel Like a Goddess

One-Piece Wonders: Forget the idea that one-pieces are boring. Today’s one-pieces are sophisticated, sexy, and incredibly flattering. Look for features such as ruching, tummy-control panels, strategically placed cut-outs, and interesting necklines, like plunging V-necks or elegant scoop necks.

For my latest favorites, check out these one-piece swimsuits for older women that don’t look frumpy
and my ultimate flattering swimsuit guide for women over 50.

Tankinis for Versatility: If you love the coverage of a one-piece but the convenience of a two-piece, a tankini is your answer. There are countless styles available, from flowing tops that skim over your midsection to more fitted options.

High-Waisted Bikinis: If you’re a two-piece kind of gal, embrace the high-waisted bikini bottom. It’s universally flattering, offers great coverage, and has a wonderful retro-chic vibe. Pair it with a supportive bikini top that makes you feel comfortable and secure.

that are modern and elegant. Plus, don’t miss my 5 ways to look slim in a swimsuit for some clever confidence-boosting tricks!

DEBORAH’S PACKING TIP: Invest in at least two swimsuits. This way, one can be drying while you’re wearing the other, and it gives you options depending on your mood or activity. Try them on at home, not under fluorescent changing room lights! Make sure you feel fantastic in them before you pack.

Coverups That Are More Than Just Coverups

Your coverup isn’t just for modesty; it’s an extension of your resort style! You’ll wear these to walk to and from the beach, grab lunch at the poolside café, or even wander through the resort shops.

Chic Caftans and Tunics: These are resort wear staples for a reason. They’re breezy, elegant, and instantly make you feel put-together. They can even be dressed up with jewelry and sandals for a casual dinner!

If you want to feel a bit more secure when you’re headed to the poolside café, take a look at my tips on swimsuit coverups for confidence at the beach.

Stylish Sarongs: The humble sarong is a packing powerhouse. It can be tied as a skirt, a strapless dress, a halter dress, or draped over your shoulders for sun protection.

Maxi Dress/Skirts: A lightweight maxi dress or skirt can double as a chic coverup and then transition into a casual daytime outfit.

Daytime Outfits: Effortless Looks for Exploring and Relaxing

These are the pieces you’ll wear for breakfast, sightseeing, light resort activities, and casual lunches.

Flowing Maxi Dresses: I can’t emphasize these enough! They’re comfortable, chic, and incredibly versatile. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton, rayon, or linen blends.

If you’re looking for something specific for a Florida getaway or a voyage, I’ve rounded up my favorite classy maxi beach dresses for vacation and the best maxi dresses for a cruise.

I own this pair of linen pants and bring them on vacation all the time!

Linen Pants: These are made for warm weather. They’re airy, stylish, and can be paired with so many different tops. A crisp white pair is a classic, but colored linen pants can be fun too.

I like a 7″ short length like these! They come in a variety of colors.

Stylish Shorts: If you’re comfortable in shorts, opt for tailored shorts or a longer linen short like the one I have in the picture. Avoid anything too short or overly casual.

If you’re unsure which cut is best for you, I’ve put together a guide on the most flattering shorts for women over 50 that look chic and age-appropriate.

Pretty Blouses and Tunics: Pack a few lightweight blouses or tunics that can be mixed and matched with your pants, shorts, or even over your swimsuit. Look for interesting necklines, sleeve details, or embroidery.

Elevated T-Shirts: Forget your old gym tees. Pack a few high-quality, breathable cotton or linen blend t-shirts in classic colors (white, navy, black) or a few resort-appropriate stripes or prints. They’re perfect for layering or for more casual moments.

The Footwear Dilemma: What Shoes Do I Wear?

This is where most of us go wrong. At a resort, you’ll be walking on sand, boardwalks, and damp pool tiles.

The “Elevated” Slide: Swap your rubber flip-flops for a sophisticated leather or metallic slide. It looks ten times more expensive when you’re walking through the lobby.

The Supportive Sandal: You will do more walking than you think. Brands like Vionic, Born, Birkenstock, and Rockport now make incredibly stylish options with arch support and back straps for stability.

The Platform Espadrille: If you want height for dinner, skip the stilettos. A platform or wedge espadrille gives you the “lift” you want without the risk of a twisted ankle.

DEBORAH’S TIP: Finding that perfect balance between comfort and style can be tricky when you’re walking all day. If you need more inspiration for your vacation wardrobe, take a look at these chic sandals to complete your outfits.

The Finishing Touches: Accessories That Pack a Punch

The Packable Straw Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is your best defense against sunspots. Look for trip-proof styles that you can crush in your bag, and they’ll pop right back into shape.

Oversized Sunnies: A classic tortoiseshell or a bold cat-eye frame is the easiest way to add instant glamour to your look.

Statement Jewelry: Leave your expensive diamonds at home and bring out the maximalist pieces like chunky gold chains or oversized turquoise earrings.

The Multi-Tasking Pashmina: Even in the tropics, resort restaurants love to crank up the air conditioning. A lightweight pashmina or cashmere wrap is essential for staying comfortable during dinner.

Casual Vacation Outfit Ideas for Your Next Trip

Deborah Boland posing on a patio lounge chair wearing a blue and white floral halter-style tiered maxi dress, a large straw sun hat with "Hello Sunshine" embroidery, and beige slide sandals.
When I’m on vacation, I want to look elegant with zero effort, and a maxi like this feels so good.
Deborah walking outdoors by a wooden fence wearing a neutral-toned animal print shift dress, a crisp white denim jacket, and beige buckle slide sandals.
To avoid feeling “sticky” when the humidity kicks in, I always suggest starting with light, breathable base layers. Adding a crisp white denim jacket is a great example of the “third piece” rule—it keeps you polished as you transition into air-conditioned spaces. I bought this cute dress last year, but here’s a very similar one they’re selling this year. This one is almost identical to the print. I like it even better because of the neckline. This lace-up version is darling, too!

This coordinated linen set, top, shorts, and linen shirt feels so high-end for a day of exploring, especially when you throw an oversized button-down on top for that extra bit of “chic” sun protection.

You really can’t have a resort wardrobe without a high-quality pair of white linen pants. This gorgeous sweater with the pants is an easy look to take from day to night.

This ruffle-neck linen dress is a great example of a “workhorse” piece that doubles as a swimsuit cover-up and a real outfit! You can wear it over your suit to the beach, then head straight to a casual lunch, looking perfectly pulled together.

A long, flowing kaftan gives you all the comfort and coverage you want and looks chic poolside.

A great pair of white jeans is an absolute vacation staple. (raw hem version here) They’re so versatile and work with almost any top you pack for your trip. This cropped shirt is cute with it!

Final Packing Pro-Tips for Your Tropical Escape

The Airplane Outfit: Wear your heaviest items on the plane. A pair of stylish sneakers, your wide-leg pants, and your wrap will keep you cozy in the air while saving precious suitcase space.

Roll, Don’t Fold: This is the best way to keep those linen pieces from becoming a crumpled mess.

Use Packing Cubes: Keep your swimsuits in one cube, your daytime looks in another, and your evening wear in a third. It makes dressing in a hotel room so much easier.

The “Double Duty” Rule: Every item you pack (except your one “wow” evening dress) should be able to be worn in at least two different ways.
