I’ve always been a blazer girl. Give me a great pair of jeans, a simple top, and a fabulous blazer, and I’m happy! It’s such an easy way to add a little shape, confidence, and style to an everyday outfit.
And blazers have gotten so much easier to wear. They’re softer and more relaxed than they used to be, and you certainly don’t have to save them for work. I wear mine with jeans, casual pants, dresses—you name it. Whenever an outfit feels like it needs a little something, a blazer usually does the trick.
If you love blazers too, or you’re wondering how to wear one without looking too corporate or buttoned-up, here’s how to wear a blazer over 50 and make it look fresh and modern in 2026.

What Blazers Are in Style in 2026?
Blazers have loosened up quite a bit. The newest styles are generally a little longer and more relaxed, with softer fabrics and less rigid tailoring. They still have enough structure to give you shape, but they feel much easier and more casual. A classic single-breasted blazer is still hard to beat, but I’m also seeing double-breasted styles, knit and ponte blazers, suede, plaid, and slightly oversized shapes.
Color can make a blazer feel more current, too. Black is classic, but navy, camel, cream, chocolate brown, burgundy, and rich blue can be much more interesting and often softer near the face.

How to Wear a Blazer Over 50 and Keep It Looking Modern
I love a blazer with jeans because it’s that perfect mix of dressy and casual. Straight-leg and bootcut jeans are classics, but a blazer also looks fabulous with a modern wide-leg jean. If your blazer is longer and more relaxed, I’d keep the jeans a little slimmer so you don’t get swallowed up in fabric.
Blazers look just as chic with pants. Try slim ankle pants, a fluid wide-leg style, or dark ponte pants for an easy, pulled-together look. A shorter, more fitted blazer is especially flattering with wider pants because it helps define your shape.
The trick is to get the proportions right and keep everything else simple. Add a great top, shoes you love, and a fabulous bag, and let the blazer bring it all together.
How Should a Blazer Fit After 50?
Fit is what separates a fabulous blazer from one that just looks frumpy. Start with the shoulders. Unless the blazer is purposely oversized, the shoulder seams should sit close to your natural shoulders. The lapels should also lie nicely without pulling or buckling across the bust.
I generally like a blazer that hits around the hip or slightly below. Longer styles can create a nice, lean line, but if you’re petite, watch that the length doesn’t overwhelm you.
Sleeves are another little detail that makes a difference. If they’re too long, have them shortened or push them up a little for a more casual look.

Should You Button a Blazer or Leave It Open?
Most of the time, I prefer to wear a blazer open. It feels more relaxed and creates a nice vertical line down the body that can make you look taller and slimmer.
But there are times when buttoning your blazer looks fabulous too, especially if it’s nicely shaped through the waist. Just make sure it buttons easily without pulling across the bust or creating that little “X” around the button. If it does, leave it open or try the next size up. Fit always wins!
What to Wear Under a Blazer Over 50

You don’t need anything fancy under a blazer. In fact, I usually think simpler is better. A crisp tee looks fabulous with jeans, while a silky tank or pretty blouse can dress things up.

When it gets chilly, I like a thin sweater, like Quince’s bestselling cashmere tee, or a lightweight turtleneck that layers easily without adding bulk.
Pay attention to the neckline, too. A V-neck or scoop neck opens up the chest and gives you a longer, leaner look, while a crewneck feels a little more casual and sporty. The main thing is to keep your layers fairly light so your blazer hangs nicely and doesn’t feel stuffed or tight.
5 Blazers Worth Having in Your Closet
I don’t think you need a ton of blazers. In fact, if you have a few good ones that fit well and you can wear in different ways, you’re set. These are the five types I find the most useful.

1. The Everyday Navy Blazer
I know black is usually the first color we think of, but I’d go with navy. It’s softer, it looks fabulous with denim, and you can wear it year-round. Try it with jeans and a white tee, striped top, or lightweight sweater. It’s one of those jackets you can grab when you look in the mirror and feel like your outfit needs a little boost.
2. The Relaxed Neutral Blazer
I also love a blazer in camel, cream, taupe, or chocolate brown. These warmer neutrals look especially good with dark denim and make a nice change from black and navy. Just watch the fit. Relaxed is good. Big, long, and boxy can be a lot of jacket, especially if you’re petite. I still like to see a little shape in there somewhere!
3. The Sweater Blazer
Are you more of a cardigan gal? Then you’ll probably love a sweater blazer. It has that soft, comfy feel you want, but a little more shape than a regular cardigan. This is an easy one to wear with jeans, casual pants, or even over a simple dress. I also like sweater blazers for travel because you can sit in one for hours without feeling stiff or uncomfortable.

4. The Statement Blazer
This is where you can have some fun. Maybe it’s plaid, suede, velvet, a gorgeous color, or an interesting texture. I wouldn’t pile on a lot of other things with it. If your blazer has personality, give it some room to shine. A simple top and jeans may be all you need.

5. The Evening Blazer
Sometimes a cardigan just feels a little too casual, and that’s when I love a dressier blazer. Velvet is gorgeous for fall and winter, but a sleek black blazer, satin lapels, or even a touch of subtle shimmer can make jeans or simple black pants feel instantly more special. Add a pretty top, some jewelry, and you’re ready to go!

Wit and Wisdom Houndstooth Plaid Jacket
Just as I was finishing this post, this fabulous blazer arrived at Nordstrom. It’s the perfect jacket of the season- houndstooth plaid, which is all the rage, with gorgeous chocolate brown suede accents and a beautiful shape.
You can dress this up or down with jeans or a dress, and the price point can’t be beat. I love it with the turtleneck. It has that Old English moneyed feel!

Can You Wear a Blazer With Sneakers After 50?
Absolutely! In fact, sneakers are one of my favorite ways to make a blazer feel casual and current.
A suede sneaker for fall 2026 looks fabulous with jeans, a tee, and a blazer. I’d save your chunky athletic sneakers for your walks and workouts and choose something a little more streamlined here. This is also a great travel outfit when you want to be comfortable but still look stylish when you arrive.
