I have learned that a great coat can do more for your fall wardrobe than just about anything else. Think about it. Once the weather turns chilly, it’s the first thing people see!
You can be wearing the simplest jeans and sweater, but throw on a fabulous coat and suddenly you’ve got a look.
I wasn’t planning on falling in love with any more coats, but this year’s styles are making that awfully difficult! I’m seeing gorgeous autumn colors, interesting textures, and fresh new takes on some of our favorite classics. So many stylish options for women over 50 makes it hard to choose.
I’ve been having fun trying on a few of these fall coats myself, and I’ve rounded up five styles that I think you’ll love for 2026. Take a look and see which one catches your eye!
1. Trench Coats in Rich Fall Colors

Who doesn’t love a classic trench coat? It’s one of those timeless pieces that never goes out of style, but this fall, it’s getting a colorful update. Instead of the usual beige, I’m seeing trench coats in cognac, chocolate brown, olive, and burgundy. These rich, deep neutrals give a classic trench a fresh, modern feel.

I’m wearing this cognac trench coat from Talbots, and isn’t the color fabulous? It’s warm, sophisticated, and a lovely change from basic black or traditional taupe. A trench coat is also one of the most versatile fall coats you can own. Throw it over jeans and a sweater for a casual day out, or wear it with a dress and boots for a more dressed-up look.
I love a trench with a belt because it gives you a nice waistline. You can tie it in front for a more tailored look or leave it open, and tied at the back when you want to look relaxed and casual.

2. Long Belted Coats in Gorgeous Jewel Tones
If you want to look instantly elegant, a long belted coat does the trick! There’s something so chic about a long coat that drapes over your outfit and ties at the waist. It creates a long, flattering line, and you don’t have to fuss with buttons or zippers.

I’m wearing Talbots’ double-face wrap coat, and I can’t get enough of this gorgeous burgundy! It’s one of fall 2026’s prettiest colors and looks beautiful with neutrals. The soft wool blend is lighter than I expected, drapes beautifully, and has a smooth, luxurious finish. And that fabulous statement collar? Stunning!
A long belted coat looks fabulous with slim or straight-leg jeans and boots, but it’s just as lovely over a dress for dinner or a special occasion. If you’re petite, I suggest a length just below the knee rather than at the ankle so it doesn’t overwhelm your frame and swallow you up.

3. Capes That Make a Statement
Want something a little different from your usual fall jacket? Try a cape! It’s chic, a little dramatic, and fun to wear. Plus, the loose, flowing shape is wonderfully comfortable, with no tight sleeves or fitted waist to worry about.

This checkered wrap is such a cute twist on traditional fall outerwear. Checks and plaids are always popular this time of year, but a flowy cape silhouette makes this traditional print feel relaxed and modern.
Since a cape has more volume, I suggest keeping the rest of your outfit fairly simple. Straight-leg jeans, a fine-medium knit sweater, loafers or sleek boots are all you need.
You could also wear a check cape over an all-black or cream outfit and let the pattern be the star of the show. I love how capes can instantly make you look graceful and even a little glam. They’re perfect for lunch with girlfriends, a fall outing, or a casual dinner.

4. Suede Jackets in Chocolate Brown and Cognac

If there’s one fabric that says fall to me, it’s suede! Suede jackets are having a big moment in 2026, and I’m seeing them in all kinds of chic new styles. From tailored suede blazers to cropped jackets and relaxed shirt jackets, there’s something for everyone.
Chocolate brown is a big favorite this year, but cognac, camel, and olive green are fabulous choices, too. A suede jacket is a great way to add texture to an outfit without wearing a bold print or bright color. It gives even the simplest clothes a rich, expensive-looking finish.

Try a brown suede jacket with dark-wash jeans and a striped top like I did. Add a pair of loafers or ankle boots, and you’ve got an easy fall outfit that looks very pulled together. If genuine suede is more than you want to spend, don’t overlook faux suede. There are some very nice options that give you a similar look for less.

5. Funnel-Neck Coats and Jackets for Fall 2026

Have you seen all the funnel-neck coats and jackets this fall? They’re everywhere for 2026, and aren’t they chic? That high, stand-up collar is such a fun change from the usual lapels. It gives a simple fall coat a fresh, modern look and helps keep you warm, too!
I’m seeing lots of cute funnel-neck jackets, along with longer wool coats in gorgeous shades of camel, chocolate brown, and burgundy. Try a shorter jacket with jeans and ankle boots for running around town, or slip a longer funnel-neck coat over a sweater dress when you’re heading out to dinner.

My only word of caution is to watch the height of the collar. If you have a shorter neck or a fuller bust, a very tall, stiff collar can feel like it’s swallowing you up! Look for one that folds down or can be worn open to create a more flattering neckline like this one I tried on.

What Color Fall Coat Goes With Everything?
Black may be the first color that comes to mind when you’re shopping for a versatile fall coat, but it’s certainly not your only option! If your wardrobe is full of black, gray, and cream, a burgundy coat can be a gorgeous way to add some color. If you wear a lot of denim, ivory, or warm neutrals, try a cognac or camel coat. Just be sure the shade looks good near your face. A coat takes up a lot of visual space, so choosing a flattering color can make a big difference!
How to Choose a Flattering Fall Coat or Jacket After 50
Finding a flattering fall coat isn’t just about picking a pretty color. The cut, length, and little details can make a big difference in how a coat looks on your body.
If you’re petite: Be careful with oversized coats that have dropped shoulders or too much fabric. They can make you look like you’re drowning in your coat! A shorter jacket that hits at the high hip or a tailored coat that falls just above the knee can help keep your proportions balanced. If you love a longer coat, look for one with a defined shoulder and a slimmer cut.
If you have a fuller bust: A single-breasted coat with a V-shaped opening is often more flattering than a bulky double-breasted style. Look for lapels that lie flat and buttons that don’t pull across your chest. A wrap coat can also be a great choice because you can adjust the fit.
For women with wider hips: A coat that falls just below the fullest part of your hips can create a smoother line than one that ends right at your widest point. A gently A-line coat or a trench with a little flare through the bottom gives you room to move without looking boxy.
Pay attention to how your coat fits over your fall clothes, too. When you’re trying one on, wear the kind of sweater you’d normally have underneath. Raise your arms, sit down, and button or belt it closed. If it pulls across your back or feels tight through the shoulders, try another size or cut. A coat should look just as good when you’re moving around as it does when you’re standing in front of the mirror!
