The leaves are starting to turn, and the air has that crispness we all know and love. It’s time to give your shoe collection a quick Fall refresh.
This year, there are many new fall shoe and boot trends, some cute, comfy, and practical, others ladylike, sophisticated, and alluring—all designed to uplevel your personal style!
spectator slingback flats,
Here’s my round-up of the best fall 2024 shoe trends I love for women over 40. Let’s tweak your chic together!
12 Fall 2024 Shoe Trends for Women Over 40
1. Slingback Shoes
It’s been a long time since I’ve been excited about footwear, and it’s all because of Slingback shoes. Slingbacks are elegant and ladylike, and they make your feet look beautiful.
I adore both heeled and flat slingbacks, and have been wearing them nonstop for the last few months with dresses, but mainly with jeans to elevate a casual look.
I own pointy-toe black , patent leather, and 2-tone spectator slingback flats, and I’m dying to buy more.
These snakeskin slingbacks are next on my list. I Iike them because, while snake print is trending, I’m not crazy about wearing it all over my body. But, as a shoe to punch up my outfit – Yes!
Another pair of slingback shoes I have my eye on are these pretty black lace ones from Steve Madden for holiday time! And let’s not forget these bestselling Debbie slingback heels that are literally calling my name (Lol!)
2. Kitten Heels
Kitten heels go hand in hand with slingback shoes and are a dainty, feminine way to look chic. Plus, the low heel makes them comfy too. Kitten heels are perfect for the office or social events instead of high heels. The silver kitten heel shoes are super trendy at the moment.
3. Knee High Boots
Over-the-knee boots are a trendy option this fall, but knee-high boots are a fashion must-have! This year, knee-high boots are sleek and luxurious, with pointy toes and low, ladylike heels. Brown is the most popular color, and you can see why. These Sam Edelman Knee-High Boots in regular and wide calf are fabulous.
Notice the squared-off toe, which is also new this year!
Leopard Print Pointed Toe Flats
4. Pointed-Toe Flats
If you read my trending styles for fall post, you know animal prints are back on the prowl as one of the top fall winter 2024/2025 trends!
There are big cat prints on all kinds of shoes, including these desert cat pointed flats. Flats are super trendy at the moment and the pointy toe (and square toe) have replaced the rounded toe.
These sexy leopard flats will spice up your wardrobe, and they are super comfy because they are made of soft, stretchy knit fabric. They’re perfect for aging feet, but don’t look old lady.
5. Cowboy Boots
It’s not just Beyonce. Many gals are dipping their toes into the Western fashion trend by wearing cowboy boots. Short cowboy booties, tall ones, they’re all hot.
The modern twist is they’re more western-inspired than full-out cowboy, which makes them less costume-like. One of my favorites is this elegant pair of Dolce Vita wild west boot in brown suede.
They look great with a dress, jeans, or you could even wear them with faux leather fleece Spanx leggings.
6. Mary Jane Ballet Flats
Mary Janes have made a surprising comeback. I’ve always thought of them as more of a practical black travel shoe rather than something stylish for everyday use.
This fall they are lighter, more delicate, feminine and fashionable. I see many women over 40 embracing Mary Janes as the perfect balance between sophistication and comfort.
Some of the more embellished ones still look a little too sweet and junior for me, but I like these cute Greta ballet flats. The beautiful teal color and suede texture make them feel fresh and up-to-date.
7. Moto Booties
Moto boots are another trend at the top of the Fall shoe list. They’re definitely popular, but I do think some look pretty grungy. Too many chains, studs, and spikes are just not me!
When I did a little digging I found some more refined moto boots that I could possibly see myself wearing.
For example, these Tyra moto booties are pared down, more feminine, and a great way to add some edgy flair without looking like a real biker. (Lol!)
If this option is still a bit out of your comfort zone, no worries, girlfriend. I’m still on the fence myself. There are plenty of other shoe trends to choose from. I firmly believe you should only wear what makes you feel confident!
8. Fine Sneakers
Sneakers have evolved far past their sporty roots. They’re the epitome of chic modern fashion this season. These light, streamlined mint and white Sambae sneakers from Adidas are the hottest sneakers around!
I know a lot of sneakers tend to feel heavy, bulky, and maybe even a bit dated, but this pair is the exact opposite. They’re modern and minimalistic, perfect for a pair of tailored trousers or even a midi dress.
9. Heeled Ankle Boots
A pair of chic ankle boots is my quintessential fall indulgence. These walnut brown ankle boots from J.Crew are just fabulous.
The suede makes them look a bit more up-scale, while the small heel gives that unmistakable confidence with every step! They’re perfect for women 40+ because they they are polished but practical.
10. Chunky Loafers
Loafers, especially the chunkier types, are having a moment. You may love the big, thick soles, but as usual, I prefer them a little less so.
I’m a huge red girl, and I love fall fashion in red, orange, and deep purples! That’s why I’m drawn to these burgundy Femi loafers. They’re a stunning deep red and add a lively touch to dark brown, navy, and black.
If this wine color is not your thing, then I would also suggest these soft brown Magical Loafers with the comfortable lug soles! They are chunky, but they don’t look like “clodhoppers” Lol!
11. Block Heeled Booties
Chunkier block heels booties are still with us, and there are some gorgeous finds.
These Azia Booties in this deep ash brown suede and faux croc mix are a quiet way to elevate a fall look. The low heel is a plus. Finding that low, practical height with such a chic boot is rare.
12. Mules
Classic, laid back, and fun. These cozy slipper-like shoes are easy to slip into and wear casually.
I’m surprised how much I like the look of these Tory Burch shearling mules. I bet that plush lining feels like a nice warm hug for your feet. Funky but fun!
How To Keep Up With The Latest Fall Shoe and Accessory Fashion Trends
Don’t be afraid to play with colors and textures.
Even though playing with bolder colors and textures may seem intimidating, don’t shy away! For example, a pair of colorful shoes can be a great way to breathe new life into an ensemble, without risking style and sophistication.
Try to incorporate trendy accessories into your outfits
Shoes and accessories are fabulous ways to update a look without completely removing your entire wardrobe. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate or over-the-top, it could be something as simple as a stylish handbag, or a chic scarf!
Curate a timeless wardrobe that you can wear forever
I love wearing new trends, but it’s also fun to pair them with older, timeless pieces I’ve had for… well, forever! If you invest in high-quality, classic pieces, you can perfectly pair them with your trendier choices.

Sadly, my days of wearing pointy toes are done. I’m 52 and can barely walk or exercise now; heels and pointy toes have ruined my feet. I am searching for cute shoes that are safe for the balls of my feet, and there are no heels; there are only athletic shoes. I am grateful I can wear athletic shoes with most outfits, but if I ever need dress shoes, I’ve only found frumpy granny shoes under $200 and very few, even slightly cute, over $200. I have been looking for several weeks and am depressed. I want to wear these shoes you posted, but I now need wide-toe boxes and cushions. I broke down in tears over shoe shopping last week. My husband wants me to find some because he knows how lost I’m feeling without exercise or cute shoes to pull together my outfits. My grandmothers lived to be in their 90s so that I might have 40+ years of ugly shoes. 😭 HELP!!!

After I injured my back and have a neuroma and plantars fasciitis. I was unable to wear heels for several years. I have several pairs of cute round toe flats that I get compliments on. Vanelli, Wonderlast, and AK sport have nice looking shoes that are comfortable.
Hi Stacie! Thanks for dropping by, sharing your experience, and giving us those suggestions. I will definitely check them out because so many of us about in the same boat not being able to wear heels. Take care. Cheers, Deborah
I bought a pair of Dolce Vita Silma western in truffle at DSW yesterday in 5.5. Two pairs in the whole store in my size, ha! One was a black chunky loafer, which I was undecided on since the sole was so thick, and I thought it might be out by next year. I was a happy camper, though. I love shoes and boots! I have loved a heel since I was around 5 feet.
I love the look of the flats and kitten heels, but all of them, even many of the boots, have pointed toes. Even though I have a narrow foot, pointed toes are never comfortable. I don’t think they’re ever podiatrist-recommended because of the unnatural position they force your foot into. I don’t want to wear grandma’s shoes, but I need to walk comfortably. I hope some upcoming shoe trends include space for my toes!
Hi Stephanie, Thanks for the feedback. Seems like I will have to do a post on this. I’ll do a little research. Which comfort brands do you like to wear? Cheers, Deborah
Thanks for your reply! I wish I had a go-to brand for cute, comfy shoes, but I don’t. Summer is easy because there are a lot of cute flat sandals that allow space for your feet. Closed toes are harder. I just got a pair of BOC flats that try to mimic the pointy-toe look but still have space. They’re pretty comfortable. I’ve had some luck with Clark’s, Tom’s, and Naturalizer over the years, but they’re not always as stylish as they could be.
Hi Stef, That’s interesting about the BOC flats. I will have to check those out because it’s a common problem, and do think a pointy toe shoe is so much flattering than a round or square toe. It’s kind of hard to believe in this day and age it is so challenging to find shoes that are stylish and comfortable. I’m going to start researching this. Stay tuned! Cheers, Deb
Deb, thanks for this tutorial, as I am always at a loss as to what shoes to wear with different outfits
especially with my size 10 feet.
Since I am somewhat fashion dysfunctional, it would be great if you could show me what you would wear with these various shoes. For example, how would you style those snakeskin slingbacks?
Thanks for the wedding pic of you and your husband; you still look adorable.
Hi Paula, Size 10… I often wish I was a 10 when the shoe sales are on. There are always so many good size 10’s to choose from. The smaller sizes get snapped up fast.
Your idea to show the shoes with outfits is a good one. I’ve done that before with spring sandals, but never Fall shoes, so I will put that post on my to-do list! As for the snake print flats, I would wear them with sleek black straight-leg pants that hit just a touch above the ankle (Spanx makes a great straight-leg Ponte pair) and a jewel-toned satin blouse like burgundy or green. The ankle length will show off the shoes, the black will make them pop, and I think the shiny satin blouse would be beautiful with this since the shoes have that elegant gold chain, which is rather dressy! Thanks again for dropping by to say hello. Cheers, Deb
