Fashion Trends vs. Fads: What’s Worth Investing in After 40?
We’ve all fallen for fashion fads that seemed like a great idea at the time—and I’m no exception! A quick look through my older blog posts, and I see I got sucked into a trend a few times. They seemed like a good idea at the time? Lol! Hello over the knee suede boots that lace up the back and those Michael Kors Fur pom pom suede sneakers.
It’s all too easy to get caught up in what’s popular at the moment. The way around this is to focus on pieces that not only make you feel fabulous but also stand the test of time. With trends constantly changing, it’s tough to figure out what’s truly worth investing in and what’s just a passing craze.
Today, I’m breaking down fashion trends versus fads so you can build a wardrobe that’s both stylish and smart!
Fashion Trends vs. Fads: What’s Worth Investing in After 40?
What’s the Difference Between a Trend and a Fad?
First things first—let’s define the two:
- Trends evolve slowly and stick around for a while (think wide-leg pants, quiet luxury neutral tones, or blazers with a modern twist like a trending color or detail). They’re worth investing in because they work season after season. Some even go on to become classics.
- Fads come in hot and disappear just as quickly ( jelly sandals, and bedazzled everything). They’re fun, but they don’t last long.
For women over 40, the key to smart shopping is to embrace trends that work for our lifestyle, avoid fads that feel impractical, and invest in timeless essentials that make getting dressed easier and more enjoyable.
Fashion Trends Worth Investing in After 40
If you want to look stylish without constantly overhauling your wardrobe, these are the trends with real staying power. They’re flattering and practical for women in their 40s and beyond, and they’re worth spending a little more money on.

1. Tailored Blazers
A well-cut blazer or jacket elevates any outfit. Whether you throw it over jeans, dresses, or trousers, it instantly adds polish. Sometimes the trend is longer jackets, shorter jackets, or lady jackets which are popular now. As we mature, structured pieces help define our shape and help us look pulled together with minimal effort.
Classic neutrals (black, navy, camel) are always a smart investment, but if you’re feeling bold, a pop of color can be a fun way to update your look. I share some great jacket options for spring in this post: The Best Jackets to Wear with Jeans for a Stylish, Modern Look After 40.
2. Wide-Leg and Straight-Leg Jeans
We’ve pretty much said goodbye to super-skinny jeans. Wide-leg and straight-leg styles are modern, flattering, and oh-so-comfortable for us gals over 40. Look for jeans with stretch and structure to smooth and enhance your silhouette.

3. Luxe Knitwear
High-quality cashmere or soft merino wool sweaters are timeless and practical. Stick with neutral shades or subtle textures for maximum wearability. A well-fitted sweater pairs beautifully with everything from jeans to trousers, making it a staple for effortless chic. In this post, I discuss my thoughts on cashmere and my tips for caring for it.
4. Loafers, Flats, and Chic Sneakers
Gone are the days of suffering in uncomfortable shoes. Loafers and flats are the perfect mix of sophisticated and trendy, while classic sneakers keep things casual yet stylish. The key? Look for quality materials like leather and suede that offer both comfort and style.

5. Classic Midi and Maxi Dresses
Forget the micro-minis—midi and maxi dresses are universally flattering and incredibly wearable. As we get older, we want dresses that make us feel feminine without worrying about wardrobe malfunctions. Whether it’s a sleek sheath for work or a flowy boho dress for weekends, they make getting dressed effortless.

Fads to Skip (Or Only Buy for Fun!)
Now, let’s talk about the fleeting fads that aren’t worth a big investment—especially when you’re aiming for timeless style:
1. Ultra-Baggy Everything
Oversized silhouettes are trendy right now, but there’s a fine line between effortlessly chic and drowning in fabric. Instead, opt for structured oversized pieces that still flatter your shape.
2. Fast Fashion Pieces That Fall Apart
Ultra-cheap clothing may be tempting, but it rarely lasts beyond a season. After 40, investing in quality pieces with great fabrics and construction will serve you better in the long run.
5. Micro Bags (That Hold Nothing!)
If you can’t fit your phone, keys, and lipstick inside, what’s the point? Instead, choose a stylish crossbody or a chic top-handle bag that’s both trendy and practical for real life.
How to Balance Trends and Timeless Style
So, how do you stay stylish without wasting money on fleeting fads? Here’s the game plan for fashion-savvy women over 40:
Follow the 80/20 Rule – Keep 80% of your wardrobe classic and invest in high-quality pieces. Use the remaining 20% for fun, trendier items.
Test a Trend with Accessories – Love a bold color or pattern? Try it in a scarf, belt, or handbag before committing to a full outfit.
Shop Smarter, Not Faster. Avoid impulse purchases. Instead, focus on items that complement your existing possessions and suit your lifestyle.
Prioritize Fit and Fabric – Even a trendy item can look timeless if it fits well and is made from quality materials.
Embrace Personal Style Over Trends – The most stylish women don’t chase every trend—they adapt fashion to fit their unique aesthetic.
Now that you know how to spot trends versus fads take a look at your wardrobe and focus on pieces that will stand the test of time. Ready to make smarter style choices? Let me know in the comments what timeless items you’re adding this season!

Deborah, I think I have all 7 of your suggestions in my wardrobe. The update of denim was the most recent for me. Mainly because I struggled to find a pair of trouser jeans that wasn’t overwhelming for me as a petite. I love a timeless look!
Hi Carolyn, That’s great. Sounds like you have a good sense of fashion. I agree that those wide leg jeans can be tricky on a petite, or anyone for that matter, and it really is true that you have to keep trying on different pairs until you find one that works for you. I’m glad you found a pair that worked. What brand were they?
Hi Deborah,
Thank you. I have learned a lot from fashion blogs (like yours) and from a dear friend who is a personal stylist. For wide-leg jeans, I found two brands that worked for me. The first was from Chico’s; they were a petite flare leg pull-on. The flare was way too wide for me. I’m talking about pretty much a bell bottom, but the jeans fit like a dream otherwise. So, I had my tailor tone down the flare to a trouser leg. They look amazing now. Unfortunately, I don’t think Chico’s carries them anymore. The other is from Talbots, and they are currently still available. Also, a pull-on – flare leg pull-on travel jeans, in petite. These needed no alteration. The flare leg really is more of a trouser leg, so the proportions were perfect for me. They fit TTS.
By the way, I love that Gibson mock-neck sweater—how voluminous is it? It looks fabulous on you, but you have a great deal more height than me!
HI Carolyn, Thanks for letting us know about where you shop because I’m sure the petite gals will appreciate it. The Gibson mock neck is not voluminous and very lightweight since it is sort of netted. It’s soft and super comfy!
