Remember that old rule; you can only wear white in summer? Things have changed, but it’s still hard for many of us to get onboard this new way of dressing. If you feel unsure about how to wear white in the winter, here are five style tips to get you past your mental block. Plus, some “wow” winter white outfits from 40+ influencers.
1. Choose Thicker, Heavier White Fabrics
Breezy white linen pants and airy white cotton tops are too thin and flimsy to work in winter. To nail a winter white look, you need to wear thicker, heavier fabrics like wool, and denim. White wool pants look stunning in winter, and yes you can absolutely wear white jeans in the winter. One of my favorite looks is a pair of white jeans worn with a chunky knit sweater, or a neutral top, or anything with animal print.
2. Go For Softer White Shades
It may be hard to imagine yourself wearing white in winter because you are visualizing stark white. Instead, try wearing softer shades of white all mixed. For example:
- Creamy whites look warmer and weightier and add depth to your look.
- Wintry whites with hints of yellow feel cozier.
- Snowy shades communicate richness and elegance.
- Creamy whites don’t wash you out the way bright white does.
The key is not to be matchy-matchy with white. It’s far more elegant to have a tone-on-tone look. Even shades of beige and taupe look fabulous when mixed in with various shades of whites.
3. Mix Textures
If you’re starting to warm up to the idea of white in the winter, and maybe even a head-to-toe white look, be sure you incorporate some texture into your outfit. For example, try a cableknit sweater dress with black suede boots, and a black leather/suede bag. Or, for a lovely monochromatic look pair a soft, flowing, long white skirt with a chunky, cream fuzzy white sweater, and taupe booties.
Another outfit idea: a silky, ivory blouse worn with a nubby, white pencil skirt. The variation in texture adds dimension to your all-white outfit and will make you look modern and hip.
4. Try a Winter White Coat
One of the easiest ways to incorporate Winter White into your wardrobe is with a beautiful winter white coat. A white coat elevates even a jeans look to a whole new level. It’s elegant, sophisticated and very feminine.
5. Pair Black with White
Is it ok to wear white in winter? Many women assume wearing white means all white. But that’s just one way to do it. An easy way to feel comfortable wearing white in the winter is to combine white with black. This classic combo looks incredibly modern and fresh when it’s cold out. Try wearing a soft, white cashmere sweater with a pair of skinny black jeans and gray suede booties, or slip on an all white knit dress, and add opaque black hose, high black boots and a black jacket.
6. Wear a Pastel Color with White
Many of you have been asking about how to wear white jeans in winter, so here’s a suggestion. Try wearing them with a pastel-colored sweater. For example, a cozy, lavender sweater with white jeans and booties is beautiful and transitions well into spring.
7. Add Some Sparkle or Shine to White
If you want to elevate white to a place of total elegance, then a bit of shine goes a long way. A bit of jewelry or a touch of hardware on your bag, or any metallic accessory makes a winter white outfit look luxurious and rich. Silver look especially beautiful because it gives your outfit an icy look. See how this silver clutch and sandals add a little zing to all white for an evening look?
